In 1951 two 5 cent coins were issued for circulation.

During the first part of 1951, a commerative coin honoring the discovery of nickel two centuries before was issued (the coin you see on your ebay link). when Canada entered the Korean war in late 1951, nickel was no longer used 5 cent coins(like in 1942-45) and redirected to the war effort and are cents coins were made with steel with chrome plating until (and including 1954).

I've seen those before. They appear more like tokens than anything else. It's just commemorative, that's all.

Though not a 'real' coin, this item does have some historical value and has attracted collectors. The seller failed to properly list the item under the appropriate category.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Nickel

Struck for the opening of the "Big Nickel" exhibit in Sudbury. Reports are that some were made in aluminum and nickel but I have only seen the nickel version.

This particular piece is as large as a silver dollar and obviously was never meant to be a 'real' circulating coin to begin with or meant to deceive coin collectors. Having said that, describing any collectibles as junk is really not appropriate.

There was a kiddie train that used to run through several giant coins that were on the mine hill around the Big Nickel Monument in the late 60s early 70s(?) for Canada's Centennial. The Nickel was the first and remaining monument. Several commemorative tokens were made with the subject of these monument coins. Although they came in usually nickel, some(especially for schools, etc.) were aluminum... there were also copper trials.

People still confuse the $20 Gold for the real thing or that it has a $20 legal tender value... it is much bigger and has the "Monument" insciption thing... but it is really a copy, and an oddity in itself in that it was officially produced and should have had copy or such somewhere on it(maybe the Hobby Protection Act was a little later consideration).

I have heard the JFK sold as "encased"... I think it was really just an excellent copy strike. Feel free to correct me. The JFK also has a Sudbury mention on the obverse edge... not pictured due to... meh

I have all the typically available ^^^ tokens. They are all nickel... except for the "Nickel", which I have in both aluminum and nickel.

I think it's an interesting design. I wish Canada hade used that reverse for it's 5 cent coins in '51. It would've been a neat one-year change

I'm thinking - no one gets our jokes. Or they consider them lame. Whatever the reason, I might stop.
