I like the Unisafe folders with plastic windows that allow you to see both sides of the coins. They are about $5.00 each (tax lncluded).

You would need two books for pennies:
1) Large Cents 1958 to 1920
2) Small Cents 1920 to present

Book to buy?
I assume you are talking about a book describing the coins.
You really can't go wrong with Charlton. (vol 1 numismatic issues)

The forward of the book you bought has some very good basic grading info.

The following link has some good pictures of various grades

The problem is a lack of some 1 Cent Pics.

Kiddo's comment about deep pockets is quite true. There are some wonderful books that go into intense detail on large cents.

For coin grading try starting with "Standard Grading Guide for Canadian & Colonial Decimal Coins", Revised Edition by James E. Charlton & Robert C. Willey. This is the book I used the most to get started grading my own stuff.
Also you should try the RCNA coin grading course. See RCNA web site. (Royal Canadian Numismatic Association)
