It has been 9 months since I started my US type set (closely following dansco 7070 guidelines). Since then I have focused most of my collecting funds on that set taking my time to get the best coin as I want it to be the crown jewel of the collection. I am beginning to become a bit restless waiting on the next type coin and have decided to tackle the Buffalo nickel set alongside the 7070, I know getting rather ambitious...:)

Anyways, I will be attempting the buffalo set similarly to the 7070 but want to set a $150 price limit per coin save the keys and I also will probably end up getting a 3-legged. At $150 a pop I can get really nice coins for many of the dates and decent grades for some of the tougher dates.

As many of you may know the Buffalo nickel series is rather difficult to grade due to the devices taking up most of the coin surace (small fields), as well as many strike issues due to the realtively high relief and hardness of the metal.
So I am trying to look at the most buffalos as possible to help me in grading/determining a good strike.

Any other advice would be appreciated and welcome on this issue as well.

Coin in question is a 1915 and is graded MS-64 by NGC (pulled from NE Numis site).
To me this coin looks to be weakly struck and shows weakness in the hair and Liberty legend on obv. and details on tail on rev. The coin just seems to have mushy detail for a coin of this grade...

Do you agree that this is a weak strike?

Looks as if the dies were a bit worn and probably rusted up.

Yes, it is a weak strike to the best of my knowledge, although many earlier Buffalos seem to have a weak strike.

Definitely take your time and cherry pick Buffalo's with above average strikes. It will make a big difference in the long run.

I too plan to work on a Buffalo set one of these days and strike will probably be my top considerations. I will purchase a lower grade better struck coin than a higher graded weakly struck coin.

This one appears to be weakly struck

Thanks for the comments so far, here is another from the same site. The strike looks much stronger to me using ribs, hipbone, and tail details as a rule of thumb on rev and the hair detail and Legend stregnth on obv.

What do you think of this strike?
BTW this one is way outside my range, but still nice for education
