I have lately been searching though all my old coins since I got the 2010 Red Book and heres my big question. I have a few coins like 1887 dime, 1827 large cent (full liberty), 1909 indian, 1916 S mercury, 1916 mercury, and then alot of duplicate dates of various Walking Liberty halves, Mercury dimes (mostly 40s), Roosevelt dimes and lots of Barber dimes. Due you think it would be a better idea to just sell the rarer coins and then buy more of the 90% silver or just hold on to them.

Opinions appreciated

My opinion: Hold the rarer ones. Market is very soft, you will loose. Keep buying the silver; a buyers market right now. I hate to say it, but I see gold/silver slipping down in the month(s).

Market is soft on common non-precious metals material. Right now I'd probably be selling a little bit of common silver because silver is a bit high from historical perspective. Keep semi-keys and tougher date duplicates for trading.

I think you should send them ALL to me.
For real - depends upon your needs.
If you are collecting as a long term investment - keep 'em all.
If you need the dough, I would sell the least expensive first.

264,000 minted, according to RedBook, the rarest of Mercury dimes minted in 1916.

bryan, I agree with benchede. Hold the rarer ones and keep adding silver coins to your collection.

Thanks, right now I'm not really sure what to due. I have mainly been adding on to my collection just for silver value not really key dates but I managed to almost complete all the Roosevelt pre 1965 with only missing 4 dates (1949 s, 1948 d, 1946 s, 1946 d). The only coins I really collect are the barber stuff but its hard to get a good price on them and if I due its all common dates. I bought 2 rolls of Barber dimes on ebay for 60 each and when I got them most were 1910-1916

Well, it depends on your future intentions. For me, I turned my attention to Large Cents and that's what I'm focused on collecting. I sold (and am sell) off my various coins to supplement my large cents. If, for an example, you wanted to turn your attention to Morgan dollars, I would sell your coins and buy your Morgans.

I am holding all my keys. The future potential of these coins is obvious. Hold the scarcer ones, sell the rest is my opinion to supplement your current interests.

I'll add my 2 Cents. If you don't need to sell then don't sell anything. Its currently a buyers market. If you have funds to continue collecting at a rate you are comfortable with then don't worry about selling anything at the moment.
