I was going through my State Quarters this evening. I have noticed some yellow toning from the coins in the early 2000's. I know some find toning attractive but I consider it to be damaged. Anyways these have been in 2x2 cardboard flips. I don't know if that is the cause of the toning or something naturally occuring. Any thoughts?

I think it is natural - but I have very little background.

I find it rather alarming as I dislike toning.

They may be in flips but I might as where you store your flips?
Various plastic containers have PVC in them, some cardboard boxes contain sulfur compounds. where you store your flips is just as important as where you would store your raw coins.

It all depends on "where" they are kept, IMHO. Toning can happen with naturally occurring gases known as "environmental" coin damage. It can happen with humidity, "bleeding" of harmful plastics, wood, paint, and chemicals just "nearby" your coins, temperature, etc., etc.....lots of things.....and only time will tell with some coin compositions, as far as "how they're doing" with where they are currently kept.
2x2's certainly aren't "airtight"......nor are home safes.

The majority of my collection is in Safety Deposit Boxes at my bank, which has them located in the "center" of the bank, climate controlled. But even that, guarantees nothing, as far a "toning prevention" ! ....

My coins are all in 2x2 cardboard flips that are stapled. Those are stored in plastic pages (I don't know the exact material) in a 3 ringed binder. And I keep them in a wooden cabinet. The coins exhibiting toning are from early on in the Statehood Quarter series.

I do have some cardboard flips I have had since 2004. Should I just throw those out? I'm not sure how the aging mylar is holding out on them.

the 3 ring binders are they plastic or cardboard? Plastic one will likely have PVC in them and this will leach into the coins over time. The same applies to the plastic sheets unless they were specifically designed for coin storage. If you are using ring binders I would suggest archival quality ones. I don't think the flips are the issue. Just to be on the safe side I would leave a bag of descant in the cabinet changing it out every few months to keep the humidity levels down. I purchased a fairly extensive collection of African coins a few years ago and put the binder they came in away until I have time to sort through them. The plastic sheets must have been loaded with PVC as in the year it took me to get around to looking at the coins they had all turned green and some of the neighboring folders had been contaminated as well. First thing I do now when coins come in is transfer them to my own flips and put them in my own folders.

PVC can go airborne and does not require contact to contaminate a coin? I see you have anecdotal evidence later in your story that could suggest this to be true.

Check out this website. If you keep your coins in a gun safe or something similar, you may want to consider on of these. I have the model 500 and am really satisfied.

Thank You for the information
I thought I smelled PVC the other day when checking out
a friends three ring binder of coins. It has a very distinct smell
I will let him know it is time to find another way to store them.
