My personal rules when it comes to selling (the curatorial term is "deaccessioning") are that 1) I only sell duplicates and 2) I use any money from selling coins to buy other coins. As I am a date set collector I consider a duplicate to be two coins of the same year, date, mintmark, etc. So for example, a 1942-D and a 1944-S Lincoln Cent would not be duplicates to me.
If, as a type collector, when you look at a 1942-D and 1944-S Lincoln Cent and consider it, in your eyes, to be a duplicate, then sell one or the other.
However, you should also take into consideration how much money you will earn from selling off all your "common stuff." Will this really earn you enough money to make a substantial impact on your type set? If not, my advice would be that it just isn't worth it. Assemble your common stuff into date sets, no matter how incomplete they may be. Who knows? Maybe when you're done with your type set you may want to go back and fill in one of your date sets.
