I have been collecting coins for about 10 years now. I am 20 years old and my grandfather began teaching me the ropes when I was around 9 or 10. Over the years I have accumulated hundreds of coins. Everything from modern commemoratives to early Half Cents. I find myself wanting to work on an impressive type collection. I want to find excellent examples of each type of design for each denomination of U.S. coins. I am a college student and do not have much money. My question is, should I sell most of the common stuff I have and work on a great type set? Thanks for the answers to come and thanks for reading. Take care.

You obviously have a goal in mind and are looking for way to reach it. I would recommend patience. Before selling anything ask yourself a few simple questions.
Do I like this coin?
Does it fit in with my collecting goals?
Would I miss it if was gone?

If the answer to any of them is yes then selling might not be such a good idea. If its no then the coin is just taking up space and needs to go to someone who might derive some enjoyment out of it. That being said the market is slow and you probably will not realize what you think the coin is worth. So if you want to sell be prepared to sell low.

My personal rules when it comes to selling (the curatorial term is "deaccessioning") are that 1) I only sell duplicates and 2) I use any money from selling coins to buy other coins. As I am a date set collector I consider a duplicate to be two coins of the same year, date, mintmark, etc. So for example, a 1942-D and a 1944-S Lincoln Cent would not be duplicates to me.

If, as a type collector, when you look at a 1942-D and 1944-S Lincoln Cent and consider it, in your eyes, to be a duplicate, then sell one or the other.

However, you should also take into consideration how much money you will earn from selling off all your "common stuff." Will this really earn you enough money to make a substantial impact on your type set? If not, my advice would be that it just isn't worth it. Assemble your common stuff into date sets, no matter how incomplete they may be. Who knows? Maybe when you're done with your type set you may want to go back and fill in one of your date sets.

Many people here, myself included, use a Dansco 7070 album to organize and display their collection. Might be worth checking out if you are not aware of this album.

It all depends on what your goals are. I sold 90% of my common date "junk" silver a few years ago. I'll admit I missed a lot of the big run up in silver prices but overall have been happy with my decision. It allowed me to make some progress on my type set & to buy other coins I have more interest in. With the exception of 2 Cents & 3 Cents I have absolutely zero interest in assembling date sets.

Hey trdhrdr007 I don't need the competition! 3 cents I can understand but why would you want such a boring ratty piece of bronze that the 2 cent is...Should never have parted with that one....I knew it would come back and bite me...
