Hello all. I was wondering what errors I should be looking for while roll searching pennies? I have found a 2000 WAM, and I know about the 1998 and 1999 WAM, but I'm sure there are others. I thought I remembered something about 1983, but I'm not sure. Any thoughts, help, ideas would be welcome. Thanks alot.

Don't mean to open a can of worms,I just want to do a little educating here. The WAM's are varieties ,not errors. There is a difference and it is significant when discussing coins. There are numerous extensive threads you can find on this forum that discuss these differences. Look in the archives and do some serious reading then jump into discussions with both feet. This is the place to learn proper terminology which will help you evaluate what you have down the road. Enjoy Lincoln Cent searching,it is really a great adventure

And he really means short list. I would add the 1988 reverse of '89 to that list, though. I'm not sure if it is limited to P or D, so I check both.

I search all years for varieties. I've even found a new discovery by searching for all varieties on each year and not just on the ones that are known. When you find one, there is no doubt as to it being a doubled die or RPM or OMM. Train yourself to look for all possibilities on every year and not just on certain years. You may even find a few error coin searching for varieties.

I do too, coop. That's why I post so many pics/questions - I'm always trying to discover something that's unknown. But, that's also why it takes me a week to get through a box of cents!

coop said, "Train yourself to look for all possibilities on every year and not just on certain years."

I agree, coop...it take patience and discipline...but that's what I aspire to do with all my coins...look at each one.

Then, after several hours, when my mind dulls, I start the short-cut of reference lists...I'm sure I've missed something...I just KNOW IT !!

and then, aaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh...I separate out my short-cut-looked-at coins and it's all madness of various bins of "scoped" (as in microscope), louped, eyeballed, hoo-hummed piles of coins.

So, which is crazier:

Look at EVERY COIN, (obv/rev with a learned image etched into the mind) and neglect the wife for two-four hours a day
or
pretend the one hour spent creating an endless stream of "how viewed" piles of coins is, like, ummm, smart and efficient.

I thought of that one too Indian1, but didn't know if he wanted to get 1982P-small date-zinc specific. So many varieties with that year with the mintmark/small-large date/zinc-copper combos. Disgusting that there is only one known example of that DDR (so far). I always look for that one. I weigh every '82 I come across to determine whether it is zinc or copper.

Funny Money, if you do want to get that specific, you should weigh your '83's, too. Never know if you'll get that mega-rare copper coin!

coop - which one did you discover? Would that be your avatar?

Scooby: The one in the avatar is one of many I've found in bank rolls. I have several of this one. The OBW rolls I was buying from coins shows then had many, many RPMs in them. That is why that is my favorite year of RPMs.

But this is the one I found that was a new year for this DDR.

Because I knew that the same doubling was found on 2004 P & D, enlarged the search for all Single Squeeze Zincoln's. The hunch paid off. I search for varieties on every coin.
Date
Mint Mark
LIBERTY
Motto
Eye Lid
Doubled Ear Lobe

reverse
Doubled devices
Doubling on the EPU
Wide A M
Close AM
Wavy Steps
Doubled Bars (More than one can appear next to the statue)
Notching on devices
Anything that can be found on coins from the era/date/mint mark.
Clashes
Die Attrition
Off Centers
Clips
Cuds
Anything that stands out as different, I may set aside for a second look another time.
