Killians - I've got a 1971 D that has the same "shadowing" on the same letters, except it's also very prominent off the bottom of the "N".

I would be very interested in anyone's opinion on this, as well.

me too Matt, also posted the wrong pic. I have alot better pic but the camera isn't here right now for me to get the chip out of it. will post asap.

It could be very cleaning marks/die gouges. The trails dies didn't happen in the copper memorials that we have known of yet. The lines don't appear to be any hub doubling from what I can tell. Or maybe another solution/explanation might help.
