I have a metal detector at home and I occasionally go out and use it around parks and what not and get the regular clad and what not. anyways I go to college at the 2nd oldest school behind Harvard and there is literally a field in front of my dorm where George Washington camped his troops for a couple days, and I'm not allowed to metal detect anything in the city. UUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH

Do it on a Friday night, when the beer is flowing. Some guy metal detecting will be the least of the authorities worries.

I know you guys are offering this advice in jest, but someone may take you seriously and suffer greatly. Detecting closed areas without permission sets the perpetrator up stiff penalties and reflects poorly on the hobby as a whole. Respect the law and continue to enjoy metal detecting.

Hmm I'd say thats a tough situation there, see if there is a archeology class or team you can join, or a permit you could get that allows you to hunt the site. Join the authorities, offer assistance to the police /univ. police if they need something found to call ya. Just some thoughts... Good Luck!

You have to become inventive. A homemade shoe metal detector and a pic-nic. Just walk around until you get a hit, then place your blanket on the ground directly over the hit. Make sure the blanket has a 1 foot hole in the center. Have some good buddies hang out around you as look-outs. Dig your find and move on. Sounds crazy, but I bet it would be fun.

Wow the responses have been great, I did find a class over the summer where you can dig at Jamestown, 1st ever permanent settlement, but you get too keep nothing....unless it somehow slipped into my pocket.

I like the picnic idea myself...thats a good one. It would just suck to do the operation and then just dig up a old beer can... As for Jamestown, it would be fun. Even having to fork over the ol' relic you just dug up, the experiance would be worth the trip. imo

Does the field belong to the city or the college? When you say you can't detect in the city what do you mean? Is there a specific ordinance against detecting, or did you call up someone from the city and ask if you could detect? If you call you will always be told no because it carries less risk than saying yes. But generally the only actual law that could be used against you would be one that prohibits damaging plants in a park (btw, if you dig proper plugs you aren't damaging anything anyway). In reality most police are too busy with real crime to give a dang about someone metal detecting and most city workers don't really care. And the worst that would happen is they would tell you to leave.
By the way, that is for city parks without specific rules on metal detecting that aren't designated as historical sites or something like that. State and Federal land have clear rules about metal detecting and park rangers see metal detectors as looters, so you need to be more careful there.
If it is college land you should just do your searching in the evening when the staff has gone home. Again, police usually have better things to do (and some do detecting themselves) and students are unlikely to care about what you are doing. I expect only groundskeepers that have no understanding of metal detecting to give you problems.

Hahaha I forgot about this thread, but I go to school in Williamsburg, VA and from what I've read any public land is considered historic and only private land is detectable with permission. My school is from 1670's so I probably could do some at night when drunk people are littering the campus. lol
