I think you handled that with a nice sense of tact. If it was a newbie who didn't know better, they can accept your advice in the spirit it was intended without having to "back down" from something, and if the seller was deliberately distorting the auction, you left no room for retaliation on their part.

I don't think the email was harsh at all. Maybe this will help this seller or they may just be a crook, you never know.

I think the email was worded very well. I see that you have already left feedback. I would have waited. It looks like this seller is just starting in coins. It would have been better to see what his response was before posting a positive feedback comment. This is a new seller and it is possible that this is the beginning of a scam. It is also possible that he simply lacks knowledge. I have to say that I would have left a neutral feedback at this point so that other buyers would notice it.

As Susan pointed out, I did give up on his response and left feedback. I sent my email on June 23 and left feedback on July 3. I suppose it is possible he was on vacation and I should have given more time.
I was definitely leaning towards neutral feedback. But the more auctions I look at, the more grossly misdescribed items I see. Punishing this guy might be seen as tilting at windmills.
It came down to the fact that I spent $1.10 on an avg. circulated Merc; the auction had a picture more than clear enough to convey that grade. His auction description was a fantasy and I slapped his hand for it. There was no flagrant foul. I didn't have the heart to do anything more.
Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I certainly learned something. I hope the seller did too.

Well, Susan, you were right--I should have waited. This morning, I got this gem back from John: quote:

Sounds to me like a person who has no idea what he is selling. He doesn't have customer service skills either and can't take criticism too well. I understand he may be put off a little but I think you did the right thing. Too bad he did not take it as a learning lesson and apply that to his auctions so that he may be able to build his customer base rather than destroying it. I don't like leaving negatives either but have left 3 and of course all 3 were sellers and retaliated with kind. That is ok, I have close to 650 other people who thought differently.

Mick, you can always buy another .99 coin from him and if its not as described,leave negitive feedback.After all .99 isn't to much to spend for revenge.  |

Well, no you don't. Here's how it works. The photo that is in this auction is here... http://www.members.cox.net/clayb/19.jpgNow, if I own that server, I can upload a different picture to that same exact address (same filename) and the new photo will appear. All that is in that auction is coded instructions to go to the exact address above, get what's there, and display it. If you have the power to change what's at that address (the seller) you can change what shows up on the auction page. Make sense? |

Technically you are right, but for the average Joe vs. a web savvy seller, you are wrong. I can put this code.... <img src="http://www.coincommunity.com/mycoin.gif"> in a listing. Note there are no size declarations. Mycoin.gif is a 1 pixel by 1 pixel transparent gif. You would never see it or know it was there. After the auction I could replace mycoin.gif with a 500x500 pixel image of a real dog coin. Voila, the auction that had no pictures, now has pictures. |

Let's see if I understand: The auction web page is static--it cannot be changed after completion. But it is valid for the auction page to contain not only a picture, but also a pointer to a picture. So while the pointer is unchanged, the picture can be changed to the seller's heart's content. If I understand you correctly, this makes sense. It allows pictures to change, or in the case that you describe, seemingly appear out of nothing. It has always been obvious to me that auctions can point to other places--a common example would be to photobucket. And it has always been clear to me that what was at the other end of that link could change or disappear--duh! Here is what really flummoxed me: it is not clear to me that any linking/pointing is being done in this auciton. It looks like the picture is embedded in the page. In fact, I would go farther than that: that thumbnail to the left of the auction info should really be part of the ebay auction description. I really, truly thought it was. If you can't edit the description (auction title), you shouldn't be able to edit the auction photo. The fact that I have been duped at least once by this may indicate that I'm a really dumb guy. But IMO it also indicates a failing on ebay's part to disclose a vital piece of information. |

You got a handle on it now.  Here's how you tell if it can be changed in Internet Explorer (I'm not sure about other browsers).... - Right click on the photo
- Click properties
- Look at Address {URL}
If the address starts with http://******.ebayimg.com, it can't be changed. Anything else can. The part in red could be anything, that's the code for the server its on, they have tons. |
