I have a 1835 bust half easily grades xf, however, on the reverse just beneath the beak of the eagle there is a 2-3 mm scratch, thicker than a hairline but also not a gouge either. I am not good at pictures as I would have posted the coin. Otherwise the coin is as original. There is no evidence of prior cleaning or dipping, altering, tooling, damage, etc. I really like the coin and want to get it graded, but I dislike these "detail" grades......any thoughts or experiences

The scratch would effect the grade and depending on how big and deep it is the coin would probably come back slabbed but not graded due to damage.

I don't know about that, I just got $2.50 Indian back from ANACS, cleaned/scratched MS60. Not disappointed in the as much as the cleaned part. But it is still worth more than I paid.

I can't imagine that scratch keeping the coin from grading, or being viewed as "Damage", but what the heck do I know? Seems like there's more going on with that coin than just the scratch. Still a nice coin though.

I don't think a scratch/hit/nick (most coins suffer from these type of things) would keep it from grading as long as it was from circulation. If it were graffiti or something like that then yes it may be a details grade when it came back

I'm a little worried about the color contrast between the toning and the untoned fields - they look far too "clean". Could be an artifact of the lighting, though.

Normally a scratch of that size will grade if it appears to be from normal circulation and not an intentional human act (graffiti or damage). I also have concerns with the toning laydown.

I am not concerned about the toning. There is what appears to be a ink mark at about 6:00. I am fairly confident that the coin is original. I purchased the coin from a dealer that I have been dealing with for some time, and at least til now he has not steered me wrong and is quite conservative with his grading. I think alot of the issue is my lousy picture taking skills. But, I really appreciate everyone's input
