Hello everyone,

I have registered and am making my first post after reading through all 8 pages of posts in the aforementioned thread. I was gripped by the compelling drama that was unfolding, eqgerly anticipating the outcome (or some kind of closure!) and it never came. It was the story of a young man who had purchased a 1932 Polish 5 Zloty for an enormous sum and valued at an enormous sum (like 9 G's!), sent it to NCS for authentication, was returned slabbed as Genuine, attempted to sell it through online auctions, and had it called a fake (altered date) by many viewing those auctions. Lots of popcorn was required as the tale wound it's way around negotiations with NCS, and their wish to have the coin returned for re-examination and the owners refusal to do so, and questions of adequate compensation.

Then it just dropped. And the thread was locked.

No resolution, no closure, no "punch line". I HATE THAT!

Does anyone remember this thread? I'd be interested to hear any thoughts regarding this, or any subsequent information that may have come to light that I somewhow missed. And if you haven't read this thread, rummage back a few pages and find it. It is quite an interesting story, and brings to focus the larger issue of authentication and purchasing really pricey coins raw.

Dipping my toes for the first time here (been reading for quite a while though) I'm keeping this to a minimum, but I would have loved to see the outcome of that story. What a thing to draw my first post, huh?!?

Here is the Thread in Question

Member machaj was only on here for 2 weeks and never brought closer to the discussion. I'm not sure if anyone has been in contact with him since his last login of 02/25/2009.

As far as the topic being locked. Sometimes they just go in circles or so far off tangent that unfortunately we deem them pointless to continue.

Welcome!

You defiantly bring up a good point and I'm curious to know if anyone has some insight into this.

Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for sticking the link to the thread in there. I do believe that was about the most interesting story I've reade here. Kind of like a tale of espionage where you're not entirely sure who the bad guy is until the very end. And we still don't! Perhaps it is one of those stories you'll just have to wonder asbout the rest of your life. Like when I found that 1913 "V" nickel in my pocket change and since I already had one I gave it to the kid next door. I wonder whatever happened to him and that nickel he jumped up and down so much about.......

I think you got the gist of that thread rather accurately....

Knowledge is King. That knowledge includes your judgment regarding whom to deal with, and what the true value of the actual item you're buying is. TANSTAAFL.

As I read through that story I couldn't help but to be struck with things that seemed....out of the ordinary. But it sure was an interesting story! What you say reminds me of my ebay life. I enjoy ebay, and have purchased many great items there, lots of them coins and currency. I've been around it long enough to understand that all that glitters is not gold. Many times I've seen something that I'd love to bid on, but something about the seller doesn't sit right with me. Could be feedback, could be something in the ad copy, could be something with the item. Although there are many ways to be unsuccessful, there is only one road to success --- Education.
