I was thinking "what if" this blank comes back with out a copper core,( my original thoughts), I do not believe I have seen one prior to this one.I now wonder how many more are out there waiting to be found...

I would like to know if other members have seen this type error before?
If so, just how many, or the rarity of it, if known. I am excited that this coin was chosen to be the topic of an article on an error!!

I originally wrote I thought it was a silver blank, as you have seen MR Diamonds preliminary statement, he does not think it is silver, or he indicated he thought the blank was consistent with a copper/nickel composition.

I really thought I knew the sound silver made, moral, if he is right, "see how wrong you can be."!!

Remember the old Heinz Ketchup commercial" Anticipation, it's keeping me waiting".

The specific gravity results are in. The first test produced a value of 8.94 while the second produced a value of 9.01. The average -- 8.98 -- is well within the normal range of experimental error and the normal range of variation for copper-nickel alloys. It would appear that this quarter was indeed struck on a solid copper-nickel planchet -- a true orphan off-metal error.

It was a pleasure. I'm always happy to encounter another orphan off-metal error. These pop up in most years. Some can be traced (or reasonably traced) to outside contractors. Some have no obvious source (like yours). And some have a composition that no sane country would use.
