Nice die clash of the memorial across his face and wicked die polishing mostly removed it. Tilted in the light you can still see the memorial shadow.

Die crack on the reverse just bonus.
I can't see any remnants of the portrait on the reverse, but it's heavily polished, too.

A nice attempt to remove a die clash. But it is still there. The reverse looks like an earlier die state the the obverse. Very strong die crack on the reverse. They probably won't get too much more mileage on this pair of dies. LOL

What do they use to polish a die? A Brillo pad? What ever they use it sure does scratch them up pretty bad

LOL - good question!

I never really thought of that before, but you're right, it does leave behind some pretty good signs that they were there. I'm sure the pros will educate us soon. Thanks for asking.

It just looks like a scratched up cent with a die crack to me.

I assure you it is not just a "scratched up cent".

There was definitely a die clash where the memorial building was across Lincoln's face and into the field to the right. They attempted to remove the die clash by polishing it off and therefore leaving the scratches that you see.

There may have been an image of Lincoln's face across the memorial on the reverse and might be why there are so many polish lines there.

The only thing that would have made this guy any cooler was if it had happened on a DDO!

If it happened on a DDO, then variety collectors would probably be less interested in it as if looks less than what a collector would like to see on a variety. A error collector would only accept it as clashed coin. So it would bring no more value with both on it.

Cleaning methods vary. Depending on how deep the clash is. The deeper, the harder they have to dig that clash mark out. after a few cleanings they devices edges will loose detail. The field is the outside of the die, the devices deeper into the die. Cleaning clash marks usually affects the fields. Sometimes deeper. What they use, I can only speculate. But the way this coin looks like they used a steel brush. But other methods have been use though.

Really, wow, learn something new everyday. Thanks for the feedback, coop. I would have thought that it would have added flavor.

But, I guess that would be like the Dan Marino rookie card I had once. He autographed it across the front. When I went to sell it, it was only worth his autograph price rather than the rookie card price (which was signifcant in terms of dollars). I guess it was considered defaced at that point.

I don't know if that is a fair comparison or not, but that's what you're explanation reminded me of.
