I saw this old coin in a shabby antique shop. It is in a piece of wood so I would need to buy it to see what the reverse looks like. It has been made into a belt buckle. I thought it wasn't authentic because it does not appear to be silver, more like pewter or something like that. My feeling was that it was cast.

Does anyone have some information or opinions of this piece?

It's Spanish colonial, and a silver coin, I believe - gold coins had extra text in the obverse legend. It's entirely possible that it is genuine, and silver, only the entire piece has been varnished giving the metal an off-colour appearance.

Genuine or not, it's been pretty badly beat up since it's been inserted in there, and there's no telling what kind of damage was done on the other side or on the rim when it was inserted.

Yeah, it does look cast, especially the portrait. yeah The coin doesn't look silver, but it's best to take it out and weigh it a bit.

The guy has a 16 dollar price price tag on it, You guys think I should pick it up next time I'm in the area. I suppose it's completely worthless if it's cast?

I would pass - I am no expert.

$16 seems to me like a price that is being put out there for someone to think they are getting a good deal when the coin is probably worthless. The 'I' in DEI just looks totally wrong also.

Spend the $16 on something worth $16 even though that is not a lot of money.

The estimate of the worth of a forgery is dependent on age and material used in making the forgery. This is clearly a modern cast copy that falls in the "Tourist Class" of forgery. If it is silver (which I doubt) it would have an intrinsic value.

As a non-silver modern forgery it is worth $1 as a curio. It would not attract a $16 bid from me a I collect counterfeits.
