I found this 1983 Lincoln Cent with two anomalies that I could use help to figure out what they are or what may have caused them. The first is a raised object on the obverse. Located between LIBERTY and the neck/collar of Lincoln. Part of the object is visible on Lincolns collar and it goes north from there. The second anomaly is on the reverse. The "A" in the word STATE has a slice through it. There is no evidence of a slice on the rim directly above or any of the features of the reverse directly below the A.

Any help on what these might be would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
cladhunter13

I was doing some research on the Obverse. Would that be what is considered a "Die Clash"?

I believe the obverse is a die clash, not sure about the reverse, we will wait and see what the pros say

I've got several prisoner cents, but none have a clash as wide as yours. The colomns on mine are well defined and none are that wide. Maybe the die took a hit of some kind.

Prisoner Cent. That term certainly fits the die clash examples that I was looking at. I did notice on the other pictures that the columns did seem to be narrower then the one I have. Cool find for me any how. I'm amazed at all the different things I have found on coins from when I started looking in October of 2009 till now.

Any ideas on the slice through the A on the reverse? It dose not seem to be damage that it received after mintage...I'm drawing that conclusion on very little knowledge in this field. I just figured that if it was damage caused after mintage...being that it is a straight line that seems to run evenly spaced on the A from top to bottom and the fact that there is no damage above or below the line on any of the other raised surfaces of the coin as if it was sliced by a foreign object. Considering the size of the letter I would think that there would be tool marks either on the rim or on the other surfaces of the coin. I guess it could of been intentional damage.

Darkened the pictures a bit to bring out a bit more of the detail.

Picking on me EH! coinsrfun. LOL! I'll wait to see if anyone rings in on the "A". If no opinions are presented for the "A" I'll label it as a die clash and put it away.

Thanks everyone. Back to the hunt for my next variety. I love the look on my wife's face when I show her my new discoveries in my new hobby. She says I'm like a kid that just got a new toy. LOL! What can I say...Its a lot of fun and keeps me busy and out of trouble.

The A & T look like damage. It happens in circulation. The Zincolns don't do well there.
