It's tough getting a good pic with details of a bright coin. I took multiple pics with different lighting. The gold toned were with low power lamps (The gold toning is from the lamps that I used to bring out the detail. The coin is bright silver), the quarter is really as bright as the pics show. Here are some pics of the SLQ, opinions?:

The coin has great detail and what looks like some decent luster. My guess is that somebody dipped the coin and some of the luster went with it; hence the overall even golden toning.

I don't think it's been cleaned, we'll know for sure when it gets back from ANACS.

You are right, she is purty. Full shield, full head, great strike.

Me thinks there may be rub on leading edge of eagles right wing, and below and above the nice lady's knee? And with the hits, AU-55 FH.

If no rub, MS-62 FH.

Cleaned.

Cool...I'm wanting to do that with some of my coins and see if I can get problem free results.

It'll be my first time with ANACS. PCGS irritated me the last time I sent anything in.
Rest in Peace

Nice coin. Definitely cleaned, or overdipped. Strong AU details.

Advice to the folks who feel this coin has been cleaned: with all due respect to snook's photography, none of the shots have enough evidence to conclusively prove a cleaning. What I'm seeing is typical lighting influence - keep in mind that enough light to show all the details tends to make any coin look dipped. It is very, very difficult to determine a dip with only photographs as evidence.

Some of the Morgans I've posted here have been dipped. Go through my Galleries, and tell me which ones. I dare you.

I'm thinking high AU, depending on strike quality; enough luster can remain at this grade level to be as bright as this coin is under harsh light.

I really need to get a copy stand. I suck. Some coins are so bright, it's almost impossible to get a good detail shot. I used to be good at this years ago with a PENTAX and diffused lighting setup but this digital SLR stuff is messing me up. With the technology and magnifications available today, I can make a nice coin look really bad.

I guess I should clarify on the PCGS irritation issue. It wasn't that I disagreed with their grades. It was the fact that they would not say why and how the grades were obtained. I don't know about you guys but when I fork over 40 simolians and don't get any data, that irritates me some.

I've got a few coins that I'm sending to ANACS, this is one and the other is a 1886-P Morgan VAM-23. I'll popst the results when I get them back from ANACS.

Hi snook, I agree that you should have a copy stand as well. They can be found inexpensively on ebay. As for the DSLR, I have a used Nikon D40, and I bought a manual, old Micro-Nikkor that fits for about $100. It's easy to figure out the exposure. I used it to image this quarter:

I do not think its going to be a FH because the ones in my album were cracked out and their head looks fuller than this one (one has toning right over the head and makes it hard to see) and neither of those had the FH designation on their label. Now sure what constitutes FH but I just go by what I have seen personally in slabs and I don't believe this will come back FH

Cleaned or not cleaned-that is a very fine coin. I have been on the prowl for one for my 7070 but they are pretty expensive. Nice coin!

Well, it's finally at ANACS this last week. The tale will told by early November (economy service). Had to wait for enuff coinage to make it worth sending in... what a wait it was.
