I have just completed my ZAR set 1892 to 1897.(Excluding the golds). I now want to move on to doing something else, I have grown pretty fond of the Morgan Dollars(Like the Coin Design a lot). Question is: What would be a good starter set to begin with?

Moe, I thought that I would at least get one response from the forum with some guidance, as I well respect the community knowledge here, and wanted some true valuable inputs on where to start, anything would have been helpful, but alas.

Tackling the entire Morgan series can be daunting as well as expensive, many become discouraged and quit long before completion. Probably the easiest way to start a Morgan set would be to go with a date set. 1893 and 1895 would be the toughest but still quite doable. If you want something a little more challenging, pick a mint mark and try to complete that set(Denver doesn't count )

Quote: What would be a good starter set to begin with? There is only one basic design, and nobody knows how much money you want to tie up into this .....so maybe it is the term 'starter set' that causes the hesitance in replies. Are you talking about years, or mints, or die varieties, or condition or what? What is a 'starter set'?

For morgans, there are some keys that are... well... VERY expensive even in low grades. I would suggest a date set to start and see how you feel after that. (it too will have some expensive but attainable coins in it)
I always recommend collecting what you like... if that is Morgans then you have a good direction to go. Grade will likely be your worst enemy if you try to tackle the full date/mint morgan set. Very tough and expensive, yet one heck of a set when its complete!
Good luck on whatever you decide!

If you just want to start out collecting Morgans, I would start with nice MS grades of the common years/mms. Then as time goes on, you slow down the process as the coins become more expensive and add on as you can afford it. But eventually! You'll have a VERY nice set and one day a complete one you can be totally proud of! Just make sure you get the grades you want first. You'll be happier! Good luck! (I didn't mean to ignore your request. I just wasn't sure what you meant by a starter set!) There are Morgan dollar collections for sale on ebay (and elsewhere) that you can start with if that's what you want. I'd rather pick them out one at a time and make sure the quality is what you want for each and every coin!

I agree with doing a date/MM set and starting with commons in MS grades. It will take a while. but that would be a gorgeous set once completed. Even if you leave out the keys, its still a great set.

If you are looking for examples of what others are doing, I am collecting by date. PCGS MS-64 and MS-65. I can track it on the PCGS website.

Sorry about the vague question Thank you all, that gives me a lot of guidance, I have now started to research about the years, mintmarks, history et al. I like the idea of starting with the highest grade I can get(and Afford) for each, and not to put a basic low grade set together and upgrade it later. This will inevitably mean that I wil not go for Raw, but only buy Slabbed NGC MS coins available. I do have a reasonable budget available each month specifically for coins.

Go with all the Carson City Morgans. They are my favourite in the set.
