I was looking at this coin again tonight, and this is the very first time that I ever noticed the difference in the sizes of the dots on either side of "CENTS"....hmmm. I know that the only die pairing that PCGS will certify as a business strike has the die chip near "STATES", but does anybody know about this specific reverse die? Seems this is a diagnostic that should be really easy to find another example of at Heritage....but not so far. Could this simply be caused by uneven strike pressure? If that's the case....doesn't that fly in the face of the very premise of a proof...which is presumably to produce a coin (for collectors) that's as close to perfect as possible?

The coin has proof-like surfaces, but that's no surprise since the same dies used to strike 4,000 proofs....were used to strike 16,000 business strikes.

That's possible, but it would be uneven elsewhere on the same side of the coin I think. But the rest of the reverse looks even and strong to me.

I'm going to see how many coins I can find that were struck with this reverse die....and am having better luck today.

Here's one...PR62

...and here's one ANACS certified as a business strike...which used the same reverse die.

To me it looks like the reverse has weak areas due to excessive die polishing.

HI Conder......Good to "see" you. I think it's interesting that I was able to find 2 examples, 1 certified as a proof, and 1 certified as a business strike from the same reverse die. Maybe I should send this coin to ANACS. If what Rich Uhrich tells me is true...and why wouldn't it be...PCGS won't slab anything without that die chip by the "T" in States as a business strike, but I have found 3 such anacs coins certified as business strikes. I don't now how old the slabs are, but they seem like my best shot.

Probably not too surprising since the used the proof dies to strike business strikes.
