Hint ... it is not the 978,541 collected by a Anchorage Alaska man in 2001

I don't know the world record but 1.3 million has got to be a good start...

Would hate to pay coinstar their fee for that. Oh what a waste of good copper pennies. The good news is that maybe I am finding a few of them now!

So much for the theory of "A penny saved is not much". Sincerely, John Leckrone

There probably wasn't a fee if he cashed them in at his bank. Those are usually free for customers. I sure hope he had at least a basic knowledge of coin collecting since I'm sure that he must have at least some valuable cents in a collection of 1.3 million!

As far as I can find online ...
A Ohio man in 2004 cashed in 1,407,550

Both the Alaska and and Ohio man used coinstar

Your link is from right from coinstar ... so I am guessing 1.3 mil is the best answer

I suspect that no one really knows as I am certain a serious coin collector or hoarder would have collected far more than that. $13,000 in pennies is no small pile but this person was not in it for profit or numismatic purposes. He was just a penny saved kind of person who chose to "cash out" his pennies (and took a $1200 hit in coinstar fees in the process). This issue is GREAT advertising for coinstar (although I am sure they HATE pennies) but does not answer the question.

I have heard through the years of internet auctions where large quantities of pennies were purchased that were in the basement or garage somewhere. Multiple 55 gallon drums full of pennies and other coins which I am sure would give this guy a real run for his money. Sincerely, John Leckrone

As a member of Realcent also, I know there are several collectors with copper hoards running into 7 tons or more.

148-150 copper cents to a pound.

148 x 14000 = 2,072,000

I am sure they have added quite a bit to that since then.

The most I personally ever had was about 3,000 dollars worth, they filled up 14 5 Gallon Water Jars. But cashed them in, they were taking up just too much room. I can't imagine multiple 55 gallon drums full, that is huge.
