True or not? Are silver certificates worth only their face value? Got a couple strange ones the do not have "In God we trust" on the back. One has a star instead of a letter on the serial number. Are these good ones to keep? LeAnn CFL Swine

I am in no way a note expert but the silver certificates should be worth more than face value, and the star silver certificate should be worth more than a regular issue silver certificate note. The condition plays a big role in how much they are actually worth but even if circulated both of them should bring a small premium at least

Thanks for the response. You guys/gals know so much, and I so little. I sure appreciate all the help I've received from this forum. Sometimes I think I'm asking stupid questions, since I know nothing. If I do that someone stop me. LeAnn CFL Swine

there was a half of a year where the president tried to do away with the motto and that lasted only that one year because it created such a uproar they put it back on the next year. I am not sure if it brings any premium to the bills (I actually wasnt aware it was like that for bills) but some coins without the motto are highly sought after by collectors, but like I said I am not a note person so someone else will have to tell you the specifics

the silver certificate was a note that was basically made during our economic time of being on the gold standard and basically meant that the note was backed by one dollar's worth of silver at the time in the nations treasury, at one time the government called for all of these notes to be redeemed for that actually amount when we were going of of the gold Standard. So nowadays they are worth face value (if you were to spend them on the economy) however they are worth more for collecting purposes... Well the star note is what you call a replacement note for a note that was made wrong etc (error) they are reasonable desirable in all notes especially older notes . as always condition is usually key and for the silver certificates with out in god We trust they were dated 1935-G- and before some 1935-G- do have the motto. Also the notes dated 1935 with or without the suffix letter were printed from 1935 to 1963( all though still having the 1935 date on the obverse) the 1935(G)with Motto was actually added to and printed in 1962( even thought dated 1935(G) as for price if you can show a picture on these notes I can estimate you a grade and price range estimate. Sorry so late with the info
