I am a OFEC collector and as I go through my list of things I want to get, I find that all of the Tuvalu coinage seems to get some really outrageous bidding going on ebay. I'm wondering - just how rare are these coins and are the catalog values listed a real reflection of them. It seems to happen all of the time on every Tuvalu auction. I know ebay tends to attract folks who like to over bid in general but is there something inherent to these coins/country that actually makes them rare that I just don't know about?

I have a 1976 cent. BU but blood red. Mintage 93,000, yet my trusty '98 Krause shows .20 in UNC. Maybe someone could enlighten us.

Beats me man, I find them to be hideous. But that is how I feel about all colorized coinage.

I suspect weavus is talking about the circulation coins - I think they are looking just fine! Lucky me, I have them, but I got them a long time ago and I don't remember the source - but definitely not ebay!

In all seriousness, I think the marine life series is quite nice. Much simpler and cleaner than trying to cram the Grand Canyon onto a coin. There's an auction ending in a couple of days that has a set. http://cgi.ebay.com/Tuvalu-1976-7pc...na_W0QQitemZ390178317345QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5ad870a421 not a bad price yet.

yes, I am speaking of the circulation coins - sorry I guess I should have been more clear. So, I agree, they are nice but so are a lot of other coins. What gives with these? I would love a set but it is hard for me to go twice to three times the Krause value. I just would love to have anyone's insight as to why these go for so much. And the only place I ever see them is on ebay.

Please don't let Krause values hold you back completely. Their stated values are the weakest part of the catalog, and are outdated by the time of publication. They should, at best, be used as a very general and broad comparative guide. If you like the coin set, and the price is affordable, let that be enough. Ultimately, the right price is what they are worth to you!

Price guides are just that: a guide. Silver has gone up over 50% in value over the last two years yet many silver coins are the same value in my 2010 book as they were in the 2008 book. That baffles me. On a 100 year old coin worth 10x it's ASW, that makes sense. But if we're talking about a coin valued at 2x it's ASW, I'd have expected a price flux of at least a few pennies.

If you troll ebay enough, you can catch some deals when the other buyers aren't around. Major holidays and Superbowl Sunday are great times to shop on ebay!
