I'm getting back into collecting, and I'm looking for some good hobbyist shops in Toronto (not GTA, I'm on public transit). I'm not looking for places where I can lay down thousands of dollars for a real gem, but where I can spend a hundred here and there to pick up some coins missing from the collection. If there are any in the area of Yorkdale Mall that would be great! Ultimately I'm looking for good personal referrals, for someone I can visit once every month or two and build up a relationship with.
Also, someone in another post mentioned there are coins fairs around the GTA like Coinarama in Oshawa. Because I don't have a vehicle, I'd be happy to offer gas money to get out to some of these shows some weekend when my wife lets me.
I also want to thank everyone for the information shared throughout this forum. I have learned about mintage levels, found a coin guide, learned that funny logo under some more recent coins is the mint logo, discovered my 2003 coins with the new and the old queen images are normal, learned about some rare vending machine slugs that made it into circulation, witnessed some great defects, and discovered that I'm apparently the only one who enjoys the colourized coins. :)

Well Plato, ooops Splato, approx 2 years ago there was a dealer that set up shop @ The Bay at Yorkville, but he has since moved his operations to a mall on the South East corner of Victoria Park and Ellesmere. His name is Michael, very knowledgeable and he had quite a bit of inventory at that time. Now, I also recommend a dealer 1/2 block north of Eglinton, on Avenue Road. 1043 Avenue road. You can walk there from Yonge and Eglinton subway stop. He definatley has lots of inventory in lots of various grades, specials running all the time, and has been in business for decades. No tax if you pay cash. Because you and this store are basically close to the subway line, Id target him. I am in Markham and have never been to the one day event called coinarama in Oshawa, however if I decide to go this fall I will let you know. Do some digging, the coinarama may be very close to the Go-train stop as well.

Doesn't the dealer at Eglinton look a bit like this guy?

I would recommend Taylor's coins. (the store on avenue road) I have been dealing with Charles for many years and in the last few years with his son as well. They are very honest dealers and really great people as well. I spend hours in their store when I go. Wonderful people!
(by the way, I love colorized coins as well)

I went to Taylor's yesterday afternoon for the first time. I dealt with Shawn (or Sean?). I didn't like the guy at first but as I got to understood his personality more he grew on me, and I did end up liking him. I went with my wife and we both had a very positive experience. Thank you very much for the recommendation.
I've also gone twice to Amis Stamps and Coins on Dundas West. Unfortunately I haven't been able to spend much time there either time because I went both times on my lunch break, and the traffic doesn't make it a fast drive there. It seems he deals with mostly stamps but it seems he has a few interesting things I would like to check out.

splatto, I am glad you gave them a try. I too had to let sean grow on me after dealing with his father for years. they have very different personalities and sean is not nearly as friendly as his father is. still, he is knowledgeable and honest so I still deal with him. I think Sean is just of a newer generation where you take your time trusting people whereas his father just trusts everyone. lol
I hope you got some nice goodies while you were there?

I mostly pawed through the junk bins but I bought a few higher grade pennies from the 1920's, and a really nice silver Salvadorian coin from 1894 for my wife.
Malissa I'm not sure if you saw my message, I don't think the map you posted in the other thread for the Dixie area store went through. I can't see the map, but I'm definitely eager to check them out too :)
