As I start to go forward from 1960 (a place I stopped at for the past 30 years) I keep getting into areas I'm not sure of whether there are reports or no.

The boxed centennial sets are obviously not PL strikes are they? They are highly reflective and much more polished than a PL set in the uncirculated envelopes .

Yet I see a lot of variation in how and what the TPG's are doing (as usual). I see 1967 SP designations handed out by ICCS and NGC I think it was. Then I see others that are the same polished finish and they're still getting labeled PL.

What are the numbers? Anyone have that handy?

I recall reading somewhere(possibly in Charlton's)that the 1967 red box set with the silver medallion contained PL coins, and the black box set with the gold medallion contained specimen coins.I don't recall any mintage numbers.I still have a few red box sets, and black box sets(less the gold medallion)and I couldn't definitively tell the difference in finish so rather than take a chance on submitting them and being disappointed I bought SP coins in ICCS holders.

I have both those cases and there's definitely a huge difference in the coins. The black case dollars remind me of what the mint calls BU dollars with reflective surfaces on all areas. The Red case seems identical to the PL envelope set in that it's a mirrored background with frosted devices.

This is hardly scientific, the cases are and have been open for 40 years and anything could have been put in there. In my instance, the black case coins have obviously been cloth wiped.

Just curious if there is a definitive answer and what numbers were given.

They made 72,463 of the red set with the medallion, and 337,687 sets in the black case with the $20 gold. Regular PL sets in plastic had a mintage of close to a million - 963,714.

The black set, with over 1/2 oz. of gold, and over an ounce of silver, cost $40...
today's melt value on the set is in excess of $600.
