I like ebay for the most part but when the well-connected and/or well funded manipulate the venue, I get a bit perturbed. Here's what just went down. The seller lists an unattributed 8TF Morgan with a .99 start and no reserve. I saw it yesterday and bookmarked it. At the time it had four bids and was just over $52. The seller states it is UNC but it appears high AU. Still, the coin is a VAM 9 first die pair and is valued north of $1500. Today I logged on to check it and the seller had re-listed it. I clicked on the re-list and there was nothing there. Someone contacted the seller and made an offer he couldn't refuse. The seller canceled all the bids (probably under the premise of an error in the listing and told ebay he would re-list it). It never made it back to ebay. Here's the coin in question and the link to the original auction listing. I call foul on the buyer and the seller.

yes this happens quite a bit. I have had people email me and make an offer if I cancel the bids and sell it to them. they say I will avoid ebay fees and all that stuff trying to sell me on the idea. I have never done it though because once one of my coins has a bid its staying on ebay and if the buyer wants it they will have to bid

With as much fraud as there is dealing on the site, I'd never consider doing a shady deal with someone off ebay.

As a PowerSeller with extended seller protection, it's worth paying 12% in fees to have them watch my back in most circumstances.

I frequently see posts on the PowerSeller boards where someone has an item for sale and they get offers. Most of the time the final sell price is 2 to 10 times higher than that off ebay offer was at.
