Need some conformation that I'm not crazy! My other hobby is metal detecting. On a detecting forum I've been communicating with a guy who found a 1928 Peace dollar the other day. Since a plain 1928 is a key date I was very curious about it. Turns out he's insisting he has a 1928-D. I asked if it might be a 1923-D or a 1928-S, but he says he's been collecting coins for 10 years and is positive that it is a 1928-D. He says he's going to send me pictures soon, but I figured I'd ask now.

I can find no mention of Denver making Peace dollars in 1928. I did find one ebay auction trying to sell one, but the picture is so bad I can't make anything out in the mint mark location.

http://cgi.ebay.com/BRILLIANT-1928-...DE_W0QQitemZ280487093444QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20100402?IMSfp=TL100402154017r22573

Is there any chance he has a 1928-D? I'm highly skeptical, but I figure if anyone would know it would be you guys! Just to clarify, the ebay auction above is in no way connected to the person I'm talking about.

By the way, I'll let you know when I get pics.

Not possible. You are right that it most likely is a 1923-D. The 3 can look a lot like an 8 without being a ground piece. Now if it's been corroded and such, that could make it even trickier but there were no 1928 Peace dollars minted with a D mintmark.
Not a case of they made them and melted them all (or nearly, like the 1964 Peace dollar and 1933 $20). They just didn't make them!

Thanks for the replies. Funny how that ebay was a 1923. Turns out the guy I was talking to did misread the number and his is a 1923-D as well. I only decided to post here because he insisted it was an 8 and that he had collected coins for 10 years, so I figured he knew what he was talking about, so maybe there was a tiny chance some had been minted. Actually I should have been suspicious because he first thought it was a 1928 no date which would have at least been possible (plus a key date!), then when I questioned him further to make sure it wasn't a 1928S he looked and then thought the mark under her neck was a mint mark. Finally when I said exactly where to look on the reverse did he see the D.
