Does anyone have any advice on how to tell forgeries from authentic pieces with this kind of banknote?

Also not been able to find any example to compare with for possible value - I'm a bit of a novice with banknotes. Any help much appreciated. Thanks.

First thing I'd do is to check that the serial number is actually "printed" or pressed in, meaning at least it isn't photocopied. I'd also look at the guilloche pattern on say the shield areas and see if they're even.

As for the price, if you don't have a guide that goes back that far, I'd look on ebay or Heritage.

The World Paper Money from Krauss lists two different issues for 1897. The illustration for the first issue features only a ship at the upper centre and the wording "Succural em Mozambique" whereas the second issue is described as having a "Standing Indian at left, ship at centre" but the wording states "...em Lourenco Marques". No values given for either so they have to be pretty rare.
Yours looks genuine and although the only illustration of the second series in the catalog features the 2500 Reis note the two signatures to the right of yours matches their picture and the serial number is of the same type (001:511 on the example given). Maybe the one you're interested in is a previously unknown "type".

Thats really helpful info, thanks to you both. wd1040, it would appearto have been pressed in aexpected not printed. As yet, I have been unable to find examples on ebay or even Heritage. Thanks Thai vic for the details, seems it may be worth getting checked out properly, i'll take to into London. Thanks again!
