I've been using my loupe a lot lately and it's a real strain on my eyes, getting headaches. Anyone else have this problem? Any advise?
Thanks

What power is your loupe and what is your lighting source? John1

Looking through a magnifying lens for long periods of time will do that but using cheap optics will exacerbate the problem. There really is a big difference in quality and eye strain levels between an el-cheapo $5 loupe and a Hastings triplet/Bausch&Lomb/Eschenbach lens.

Was gonna mention the lighting source because most likely you use your loupe under strong light. Most of the time I don't use my loupe, only a desklamp.

Wait till you get old I get headaches from time to time. I found that by using different types of magnifiers for different jobs helps to cut that down. I use two different loupes and an array of different size and power magnifying glasses depending on what I am looking for.

Depending on what you're looking for, use a lower power magnifier. I only pull out my 10x loupe when I need to. I normally just use a 4x magnifier to look at and screen.

I used to get headaches, but no more. I have my desk lamp with the magnafier and I look through the magnafier through the loupe at the coin. Works great for me, but everyone is different.

I just bought a great bargain, cheapy 20x lighted loupe, which may help you. The light makes a big difference compared to my previous 10x unlighted loupe. And it's only a shade over $5 (plus free shipping for total Amazon orders over $25)! Excellent loupe for the price! http://www.amazon.com/SE-Illuminate...pd_rhf_p_t_3

That wouldn't help but if he keeps both eyes closed, that really will solve that problem. 1.Look into purchasing one of those magnifiers on a stand. Then you just slide the coins under that. Might be the constant movement of your head creating your eyes to contantly strain to correct focus. 2.Possibly your getting to old for this hobby. Then the solution is simple. Try bowling instead. 3. Always check for the type of lighting your using. If flourescent, change to a Incandescent lamp. Also, look into the new LED lamps that fit into a standard lamp socket. They are fantastic and run on 1-1/2 watts for a 50 to 60 Watt incandescent equivalent. 4. Pack up all your coins and send to me. I'll suffer with the head problems for you.

On a serious note most people should not be using fluorescent lamps for closeups. If your using one in the area where your working, you should try changing to either Incandescents, LED's or even metal halide. What most people don't realize is Fluoresccnt lighting is based on a pulse of electrical charges running through a medium such as different types of gasses. By Pulse, this is a NON constant lighting and many people get headaches from this and don't know why. This is known as a strobiscopic effect and is really noticable if you watch a fan blade as you turn it on in the facinity of a Fluorescent lamp. The blades appear to speed up, slow down, sometimes almost look as if they stop. If that type of lighting is in your area, might well be the reason for the headaches.
