Ok, I have come back to coin collecting and wanted to start off with a stunning set that may have increased value.

I selected the Silver Eagle since it is a short lifespan - 1986+ and affordable in most cases.

However, I find myself buying quite a few from ebay. I believe I am getting decent to very good deals but perhaps you can reassure me since I am new to this.

My goal is to get the best deals and slowly (as I can afford) pick up a 2 complete sets of silver proofs, ungraded. I also am aiming to get an additional set complete that is either PF 69 or PF70 for all the coins (1995-W not included at this time)

I want to do this for me and my little guys (2 boys - 4 month old and a 2 year old)who I hope will grow up and join me in adding to their future collections. Thus the two sets for them and the graded for me.

With all that said, I have been picking up Silver eagle proofs around the $30-$38 mark with shipping included in that number. In proofs with original box and COA, I have picked up: 1988 ($37.50), 1986 ($35), 2004 ($30), 2001 ($33).

I also picked up one 2005-W NGC PF70 UCAM for $81. I want all my graded coins to be NGC preferably.

Any eagle buffs out there tell me if I blowing too much money or am I doing ok? I have to stop as I pretty much nuked my monthly budget. Am I doing this in the best way? I want to stay with proofs at this point. I plan to expand out my collecting as I can.

Thanks! I really want to make sure I am not way off base here before I get into next month's budget.

Howdy swest, & welcome to our Forum!!

Your doing exactly what I wanted to do when I started collecting ASE's. I also started and wanted to collect all the proofs before anything else before I got sidetracked. Then I started to thin my resources out when I started to seriously put together a MS70 set of ASE's. At the time I thought it would be a cakewalk and cheap--Boy was I wrong. The prices for some of those I just won't pay for MS70. Many have become what I call 'overpriced" and out of my budget consideration. As much as I love the ASE's, for the money they want for some, I rather get some Saints or 5-10 Indians--GOLD--Old gold--

As for your question on price you paid on ebay--Altho you can pick up some bargains "occasionally" there, sometimes you can get hammered there, especially buying "raw"--What I like to do is look at completed items for that item to see the high & low bids that have happened the last month. Secondly, I go to websites that sell coins and compare the prices vs the item I would want to bid on. One of my compare sources is this place: http://www.mintproducts.com/ another is: http://www.cameocc.com/webdocs/index.aspx. I have purchased coins from both of those sites by the way. I also go here: http://www.pcgs.com/prices/ altho here ALL is over priced. If its higher than what pcgs wants your getting eaten alive--they definitely are the "high end" and "over priced" of the bunch--

Okay, hopefully I gave you something to chew on to get you going--Good Luck on the hunt, I am sure others will chime in if the urge gets them--More ?'s--Just ask away--

Sounds like you're doing ok. Be sure to get S.A.E. coins with original box and coa. If you have them certified you might consider keeping the boxes/papers/capsules just in case you want them in the future.

Personally speaking I wouldn't worry about having them slabbed but would insist on the original box and COA. Lets face it MOST of the proof eagles are extremely high grade and just providing a set for your young ones is an outstanding idea but.....I can't see the expense of having them graded or paying a huge premium because they have been graded. The extra money would have been better spent just by filling your set and over a period of time that could be a considerable amount of money. And, if you are doing this for the kids I would let time take care of future profits and let the grading companies look elsewhere for their profits. Good luck and welcome back to the greatest hobby in the world!

Welcome back to the hobby and it's great to hear you may be "grooming" some future collectors! SAE's are very beautiful coins and make a great set. The 70 grade proofs can be very pricy. You should follow the advice about the original containers and COA's. This helps with value down the road. If you do ebd up collecting slabbed coins try to collect them in the same grade as matching grade sets tend to bring more money. Welcome to a great forum! Mike

On another note, you may want to subscribe to the U.S. Mints mailing list to get your proofs directly. It should save you some money. Mike

Thanks guys for all the info. I have already bought this year's eagle from the mint. I put myself on the mailing list at that time. Thanks for the pointer though. Well, I will keep an eye on what I am doing with ebay. There seems to be some good deals on there if you work hard enough :).

How the heck can you search (pricing info) on auctions that have already ended?

But doesn't the mint get a bit off of you.
Can't you guys buy at dealers who havent opened mint box, selling for bullion?
I don't know, because I don't live in the US and here its impossible to find a dealer who KNOWS about his coins, maybe a few, but not all.

TKC!

I'm far from a Silver Eagle expert, but I do have a complete set, and I also have most of the proofs.

My advice, for what it's worth, which probably isn't a whole lot, is, keep the original box, keep the COA, and save your money with regard to grading.

We have six grandkids, and for years now I have been setting aside coins for them, including ASE's. It makes me feel very good to think, and hope, that they will be collectors, and that the coins I am giving them will be enjoyed by family members for years to come.

Those eagles certainly are beautiful coins. Just an idea, but if funds permit you may also want to pick up a gold eagle in the birth year of your kids.

Silver bullion on ebay is a waste of money. Sure you'll find what you want or need but you'll also pay and arm & leg for it too. Some are going double the spot price.

go to ebay and click on "advanced search" and then put in ASE or what ever date and then under that there is a box that says "completed auctions only" check that box and hit search and it will only show you completed auctions

Thanks for the info guys!

Also, I did buy (wife screamed) a couple new Buffalo proofs for my boys future collection. So I wanted to start them off right. I had to play poker for g 12 hours yesterday and was lucky enough to make enough money to pay for one so far.

Wow, this post is just like the one I was going to post. I checked on the advanced search like suggested which gives me a better idea of what the coins have sold for on ebay, but where else can I get current prices for ASE and AGE coins?

I have seen a full set of gold AGE for 2005 selling in PF70 UC for about $1550. Is this a good price? I have looked at previous auctions and it seems ok, although there aren't any recent 2005 auctions, just 2006's. So I would think there is a slight preimum for 2005 over 2006. I'm open to any and all comments.

From a value or price standpoint, what is the difference between ms70 and pf70. I know one is uncirculated and the other is a proof, but does a collector or investor prefer one over the other? If you want to keep these coins for many years, which ones will be worth more over time?

Also, if you buy these coins that have been graded by NGC or PCGS, are they more valuable than the coins with the original box and COA? And if so, why?

Are the Ultra Cameo PF69 or 70 coins really worth the extra money? Since I'm new to this, I want to buy the nicest sets I can, but I also don't want to overpay as well. It seems that there is quite a price increase from 69 to 70 and I haven't seen any 68's or below. Maybe because they don't grade out that low as proofs or uncirculated?

What's the denomination for the AGE set you're talking about? Also, there really is only a minute difference between the 69 and 70, which can only be seen under microscope. Most collectors will advise you to just buy the 69 for economical purposes. Generally, PCGS 69's and 70's will sell for a premium over their NGC counterparts, and over the originally packaged ones. I'm sure others will have much to chime in on the subject and cover a lot more ground than I have.
