Excellent find. I don't believe this is a proof example but the coin does have and excellent strike and is an example of the bold N in CENT on the reverse. I would grade the coin at least AU-50. Red Book lists it's value at $650.00.

Thanks for your reply, what is the Red Book and would it be worth having it slabbed?

The Red Book is a general guide on US coins. It should be intended as a guide only. That is a really nice looking coin and a much scarcer date. I would slab it personally. PCGS would be my choice but ANACS would not be bad either. They would be the most cost effective Co. The coin looks to be at least a mid-grade AU (53 or 55)

When I was younger my Mums friend's Dad gave me a biscuit box full of small Dr Rumneys snuff boxes, it is only now that I have dug it out and had a good search though it and found some great coins. As far as slabbing is concerned, how long does it usually take(from Britain) and how would this affect the price of the coin if I was to have it slabbed?

Talk about "beginners luck"! Congrats on your "find"! I must say, I didn't think the tribe had gone that far, after "white-eyes", but who knows? A scalp is a scalp, no matter what country it came from! Dick
