Hi Guys

I posted this dollar before at some point I think but figured why not just post it again and see what I learn

I am interested in knowing if it is possible to determine any VAM information in this grade and also kind of curious how many grade levels I should bump off for the hole or if it just becomes a G grade because of the hole. I tried to get the doubling around the bottom stars but my lighting isn't cooperating with me today. (edit got it)

If additional images are required of any area just ask and I will post them right away.

thanks for your help

malissa

I'm looking around for you - the mint mark looks to be doubled to the south (below) but I see no listed VAMs with that characteristic. Are the stars doubled both sides of the date?

It looks like a C3e reverse but the mint mark is mangled and it is hard to be sure. if it is with the stars it would be Vam-8

i found a couple more areas of doubling and sure I could find more if I just keep the loop still, but took a little better view of the mintmark in case that helps.

Too much wear and a hole too, unless its a family hand me down with keepsake value to you, it is only worth melt. There are only about 4 of the '88S VAMs that bring premium money and I don't see anything on yours that bring any of them to mind. Holed coins are like the kiss of death to a collector and it would probably take an ultra rarity to even get their attention, let alone pay you much. Sorry.

does a coin really grade down to melt value because of a hole? I always thought maybe a few grades down or flat out g grade.

unfortunately a hole in a coin is like leprosy a damaged coin, and as the above have said unless its an ultra rare coin its basically not even looked at....

hmmm I guess I differ from most collectors then because I am not at all bothered by holes as long as they are placed well. you know no right through the center or damaging any designs badly. the hole in this one was between letters any way so it doesn't disturb me.

thanks for your opinions everyone!

I have to side with the hole haters. Even a hole in a LWC 55 double die or 09 SVDB would be the kiss of death to most.

there is nothing wrong with collecting them, as long as you know they won't command any premiums, there are many many older coins with holes in them guess they didn't use pockets that much LOL

I have seen (holed coins repaired) But they are not something I would actively collect. Even mildly cleaned coins are frowned upon by many collectors. I do own some of them.
