How rare is it to get "S" mintmark coins in your everyday change? Granted, I'm from Canada but I've never seen a U.S. coin slip into my change bearing the "S" mintmark. Would that be a case of recession/depression if lots popped up? (Cents are common if roll-searching, I'm assuming, but I'm talking day-to-day transactions.

What was the date and denomination of the coin you received?

Less of a chance with recent dates as they are mostly proofs but older S coins were dabbled. What is the date?

I have been getting a lot of copper cents from the 1970s lately, which I attribute to the current economy (The Great Coin Jar Dump of 2008-2010).
The San Francisco mint produced 'S' marked cents for circulation from 1968 to 1974. Of those multitudes of cents from the seventies that I have been getting, a few have been S mint.

Jefferson nickles as well; 1968-70-S were minted alongside the Proof issues. Dimes, Quarters, and Halves were proof-only issues since 1968. Eisenhower's 1971-76-S were made in 40% silver Uncirculated (Blue {gov't packaging} Ikes), and 40% silver Proof (Brown {gov't packaging} Ike's) alongside the clad proof versions.

Just goes to show you there's money around and doesn't need to be printed. We just have to spend our "S"s. Hah, as if.
I've received none in my change (as stated in the OP). I'm waiting for the day. That would be like finding a W mintmark in Canadian change. RARE occurrence!

Quote: Jefferson Nickles as well; 1968-70-S were minted alongside the Proof issues. I wish I were getting a lot of late 1960s and 1970s nickels in my change. All I seem to get are 2000s and 1964s, with the occasional one from 1980s or 1990s. That said, it has been quite a while since I have found an 'S' mint nickel in my change. Note: this is strictly from normal transactions. I have not roll-hunted in a long time.

I get quite a few "S" mint Nickels from Roll Searching them. Check the "Nickel searching thread" and you'll see the rates at which they're found. As JB said though.....through normal daily transactions, they would be pretty rare to show up.

The only S mint coin that doesn't surprise me when I see it is the 1970-S nickel. We seem to come across those all the time.

LOL! That's funny. I just picked a nickel out of our till at work on Saturday. I stuck it in my pocket and forgot about til now. Just went and looked... sure enough, it's a 1970-s.

Here is Southern Cal, I tend to get many 1969-S and 1973-S,74-S LMC's. These tend to be RD and RB examples.

There are some 1968-70 'S' Nickels and 1968-74 'S' Memorial Cents still in Denver circulation (I just got a 1970-S Nickel yesterday).
