Does anyone have any insight into the US Mint's reason to not distribute new coinage (quarters or otherwise) to banks. It seems counterintuitive, if they want to get these into circulation, to not distribute to banks. Does anyone have a tip for us "fun" collectors to aquire new coins without having to buy directly from the mint?

Good question and there has been some discussion on this. It seems that the only way you can be sure to get UNC rolls is to go the mint route and pay the premium.

I personally am going to wait and see if the local bank gets any rolls (a teller is looking for me). If not, I'll buy a couple rolls either from the mint or ebay, whichever is cheaper.

As for getting them into circulation, your point is dead on and there really is no other way to get them into circulation than releasing to banks in some form, bags or rolls, so they can pass on to businesses and customers.

And - welcome to the forum!

I think the reason is that they would be "collectable" if they're all in amazing finishes and availble only from the mint. Commemoratives usually are like that - issued to be bought by collectors and not released to the general public - just that the State Quarters normalized the practice for a while.

If you want the Grand Canyon but can't afford the new 2010 quarters, just get an Arizona State Quarter. It's there already! Man, I really hope these next TEN years of quarters is really worth it.

What will happen to regular dated quarters, then? Will they be produced to fill the demand for quarters? Because if the quarter dies in America I can't see any other alternative to everything being priced in increments of $1.

The mint is not causing the problem. They would love to move their product.

The Federal Reserve orders coins from the mint and then distributes them to the banks.

One could then say that the Fed is the problem here, but it is the banks that are not ordering enough coins. Actually, a lot of banks are sending coins back the the Fed.

As long as there are a lot of people turning in their loose change, the local banks will not have a need to order coinage.

In the end, it was the Fed that made the call to not order the new quarters and dollars as they have in the past.
