I have a quandary here.... 1776/1976 US Bicentennial Silver Proof Sethttp://cgi.ebay.com/United-States-B...et_W0QQitemZ a href= https://www.coincommunity.com/go/link.asp?target=https://www.ebay.com/itm/-/180490180827 target= _blank rel= nofollow 180490180827 /a QQcategoryZ139815QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo=DLSL%252BSIC&its=I%252BC&itu=UCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC&otn=20&po=&ps=63 Above is a link to a picture of what this Set looks like for those interested. This isn't "my" exact Set, but a pic of one from ebay.My Dad gave me this Set years ago......it's a nice little Set too. For those who don't know, it has 3 coins with a certificate in a nice little OGP case. All 3 coins are 40% Proof Silver. They are an Ike, a Kennedy half, and a Quarter.....all 1976 (of course) I just happen to bring it home today from the safety dep. box (along with some other stuff. I brought these things home just to ponder whether or not I should "crack em' " and put them into albums to fill some holes. I typed in the info. on the Internet and it led me to an ebay auction with seconds left where one sold for $13.75....so.....there's not a whole lot of value as a Set here obviously. "Sentimental" value is another story, but......I'm not sure how to feel about "breaking this lovely little Set" apart to fill holes. I can't decide....what would most of you do in this situation ? Keep it intact or fill some holes ? These coins being in various albums will still always be my "Dads" gift to me......right ? But this is such an individual nice little O.G.P. too....breakin' em' out of this and throwing this away, certificate and all seems kind of "un-smart" and "disrespectful" too..... What do I do here ? ..... ....I'm on the fence ! Bust it or keep it ? And I "do" have the same quandary with the exact same thing, only in a Bicentennial 3 Piece Uncirculated Set (all 40% Silver too) And I have a 1961, 1962, 1963, and two 1964's, all in original Treasury Dept. envelopes. Philadelphia Mint. (all exquisite condition too !) Like I said...this stuff I've listed is from my Dad over the years....and I brought some of this stuff home .....just to ponder using them in albums.....and to look at them. What to do.....what to do......what to do.......sigh..... Had I bought these myself.....no problem deciding right ?......but gifts from your father.....is this right or wrong to "bust em'".... And don't ask what my conscience tells me please ! ..... Maybe I should have made a "poll".... Edited by eaglefoot 04/08/2010 11:59 pm

I know exactly where you're coming from. I have several sets that I've gotten as gifts over the years and I tend to keep them whole for sentimental reasons. I would suggest that if you have any doubt, keep them whole for now - you can always decide to crack them later but you're not going to be able to put them back together.
If the holes bother you so much, you can always pick up the 1976 set pretty cheaply. They you have the best of both worlds - the gift from your Dad in original condition and the holes in your album filled.
Good luck with your decision.

They look pretty nice filling those three holes in the 7070 album . I just broke apart one of those sets for mine...It had no sentimental value though. I am not sure if I would break it to separate the coins into different albums though. If you think you might regret break it open, then I think Patrick's suggestion is a good one.

i COULD make a trade with you, I have a 1976 proof set with all of the coins, I could promise never to break the set and you could break that set and get what you need, all I ask is that you get the coins that you don't need put in holders straight away and send them to me

lafaa123 its the 3 coin silver Proof set eaglefoot is talking about. Personally I would buy a set of ebay or elsewhere to fill the holes and keep the gift intact..

eagle; for me, breaking them open would be contingent upon my collection and empty holes. If I had empty holes for those coins in a proof collection, I'd break them open. If not, I wouldnt.
Heard here and there more than once, "When in doubt, do nothing."

You can find ones to crack open on ebay fairly cheap. I bought one last week for $11 ($13 after ship) and cracked it open for my 7070. They look nice and shiney in there. If its sentimental I would just keep them. Lots of time I keep junk for sentimental reasons and will most likely keep it till the day I die. Or pass it on to someone close to you that will appreciate it for what you have.

Eaglefoot,
I see you have a bit of a decision to make, I have to agree with some others, keep the "set your father " gave you intact, just because He gave it to you, and go out and pick up another set, as suggested, and fill those holes, good luck, Mike...PS, Any tornadoes touching down by you!!

Eaglefoot, I realize that you are an ebay "virgin" but for under $20.00 I'd take a chance and pick up a cheapo set to bust open. Obviously it is not the set that is causing your difficulty, it is the gift factor. Getting one off ebay would solve this dilemma and keep your dad's gift intact. As to the uncirc. set... bust it out it was only able to stay together in it's picture frame holder (OGP) for about a week... old glue!

Yeah....a year or so back, I "actually" signed up on ebay, at least I think I did....maybe it was "paypal" or something.....I really don't remember.......nor any passwords or usernames or anything whatsoever. And after I signed up, I didn't even go on ebay "to look at stuff" again for like a year, so.... I was going to ask thoughts (or, I guess I did) on my "Blister packs" Philly uncirculated Sets from the 1960's, still in the Treasury envelopes.....but I assume it's all still the same theme with the '76 Set. I guess I might have to "re-investigate" this ebay thing !

It can work both ways. If your dad knew you needed some coins to fill some holes in your 7070 ... I am sure he would have gladly bought them for you to do that.
Point two .. I bet you look at your 7070 many more times than you look at that 3 coin set. You would know when you look at your 7070, that those coins came from your father.
For me .. I think my father would be proud to have some coins he gave me to be in such a nice collection like a 7070.

I would think that your dad gave those to you so that you could do whatever you wanted with them. I'm sure he'd be happy either way knowing you did whatever made you happy.
If you had cracked them the day he gave them to you and they went straight into your albums, how do you think he would have reacted. Proud of you, I'm sure. If you do crack them, your album will always have that much more value when you see those holes filled and know that they were because of your father.
But, like everyone else, I vote if you're not sure - do nothing with that set and go buy another to crack for your albums. I don't think you will be wrong either way.
