I am in the process of building a 7070 type set. I am using the F-XF range for classics and proof for any moderns post 1950 or so. Typically focusing on the highest grade for the lowest cost (type coin, not key). As I get into this journey I am looking to find some reference books that would be useful. I already own the Red Book and a copy of "Photograde" 18th ed. I have read Bowers' "The Expert's Guide to Collecting & Investing in Rare Coins" on loan from the library and am going to purchase it. Other books I am looking at are:

"A Guide Book of United States Type Coins (The Official Red Book)" - Q. David Bowers
"The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection, Edition #2" - PCGS - I would mainly be looking at this one for the Counterfeit Detection portion, is it worth it?
" Red Book Professional Edition" - I currently have this one on loan from the library and it typically deals with higher grades than I will be looking for, also I am hoping a lot of the history outlined in this book could be found in A Guide Book of United States Type Coins (The Official Red Book).

I am looking for a book that outlines each coin type and gives some history, grading guidelines, striking characteristics, detecting counterfeit coins, etc. Are there any other reference books that would fit my needs? Any input is appreciated.

I personally own "A Guide Book of United States Type Coins (The Official Red Book)" - Q. David Bowers and that would be an excellent book to get you started. The only other type book I have seen is "United States Coinage: A Study by Type" by Ron Guth and Jeff Garrett but I have never read it so I cannot comment on its usefulness.

For grading purposes, "Photograde" is one of the best and I also have "The Official ANA Grading Standards for United States coins" in my reference set, it does list some of the strike qualities for certain years that need to be taken into account when grading.

I would second "The Official ANA Grading Standards for United States coins" by Kenneth Bresslet for grading guidelines.

Thanks for the reply. I was pretty much set on getting the one you mentioned first in your post, so I will certainly be getting that one.

So is it worth purchasing "The Official ANA Grading Standards for United States coins" since I already have Photograde? You mentioned striking qualities, what else is in "The Official ANA" book of note that is not in Photograde? I have seen some mixed reviews on the ANA book, but then again what doesn't get mixed reviews.

The grading standards themselves are not 100% identical. I don't have an example off-hand.

Which one is considered to be the most used/accepted? Any other reference books that I should be considering? Thanks for the replies.
