Just getting your opinions on what this would grade out as. Just picked it up last night. Sorry pics are a bit dark but dont have the coin in hand yet.

Any suggestions on trying to get the crud off the obverse?

Nicer then my 1899 :) I would imagine yours to be XF, or at worst high VF

I have the feeling this one's going to be a surprise in-hand. There's a whole lot of detail if you look close - AU at worst, limited by lack of luster which is important in this series.

Very nice coin, I would grade it at AU-53. An acetone dip should remove the dirt.

I'm not sure I'd want to remove the crud, even if done "properly" - that might lead to an unsatisfying contrast between cleaner (removed-crud) surfaces and non-crud toned surfaces. Sometimes you just want to leave it as it is.
