1862-S Quarter for grading... What do you think of this piece. Does this coin appear to have any issues that would prevent you from buying it?

Is the mintmark supposed to be that big? I don't know much about grading either, but it just seems big to me. Also, does the date look strange to anyone?

That is how they are in that era. There is nothing that concerns me there. I cracked this out of a PCGS slab yesterday.

I guess this question begs to be asked: Why did you de-slab it?

It was PCGS Genuine... .98 which would suggest damage and/or tooling.
I took to a local coin expert and he couldn't see what they were talking about in the slab, so he wanted to check it out outside of the slab. It was going to be coming out anyway, so we cracked er out and he was still stumped.
The ONLY thing he said that may cause an issue with PCGS is how the fields are a little lighter when compared to the darkness around the devices. It is consistent all around the coin. Down around the date, both sides of Liberty, and the reverse. There have been a lot more questionable coins make it in to PCGS slabs than what we are seeing here.
If anything, the color may have been caused to a wiping long ago, but has recirculated and are left with this... but he said there is nothing that would be stopping him from buying this piece, even though PCGS said otherwise.
I did however get a tremendous buy on this under-priced coin.

Send it in to be reslabbed. Bet it slabs with a grade!

I can see potential tooling as a few things stick out to me, but I don't know for sure. Under liberty's right breast there is a straight cut that looks a little odd. It should be a smooth transition under her breast to the creases of her robe after looking at several other examples. Some of the other creases look very sharp considering the amount of wear. I'm wondering if this is what PCGS was unsure of? Anyways, I agree with VF-30, and a nice coin overall.

The TPG's do unexplainable things sometimes, and I believe this to be an example. Laugh all the way to the bank with this one.

I think PCGS has a monthly quota to meet for issuing GENUINE slabs

What also assisted my laughing is I made an offer in this coin, the seller declined. So I waited around for the auction to end and got it for cheaper than my offer.
But this coin is staying raw. I don't really much care for those plastic prisons. The coin is real, the coin is choice-VF... that's good enough for me!
I have been becoming less and less of a fan of slabs. Doesn't matter which company. I recently bought a 92-S Dollar NGC said VF30. The coin had luster in the devices. With tape over the label, a poll of 5 dealers at a coin show came up with 40, 45, 45, 45, 45. All had agreed the coin had been cleaned as well. We were not sure if they had net-graded it without stating? There were laughs when they saw VF30.
The saying has been out there forever, but I firmly believe "Buy the coin, not the slab" no matter who it is.
