I just purchased the 1900 Liberty Head Nickel shown below. It is in a PCGS MS63 Holder certified by CAC. I am not very good at grading MS coins and I was wondering what is preventing this nickel from grading MS64 or above? To my untrained eye, it looks better than MS63.

Very nice coin. The details on this coins excellent, the only reason IMO that it didn't grade higher is because of the dull luster and light staining on the obverse.

Is it in an old (Green)PCGS holder? If so it may be a candidate for an upgrade. It looks better than MS 63 to me as well.

I agree, your nickel should have a higher grade. Despite the minor tics (which are very few)and the lite staining, I see this coin at 64 very easy.

It *is* better than 63; hence, the CAC sticker. I will say, though, research indicates that the TPG's appear to be pretty hard on this issue.

That is one extremely nice coin.

it should be higher.
As Echizento indicated it may be luster.

Thanks for your input. I was thinking that with its strong strike and lack of any distracting marks, it would have graded higher. I guess it must have been the uneven toning and the somewhat dull luster that got it graded MS63. I'm happy with the purchase, and I probably wouldn't have been able to buy it if it were graded higher. It's by far the nicest Liberty nickel that I own and it fits in well with my certified 20th Century Type Set.

I am way to strict with my grading. I thought I saw wear on the bow.
