I purchased this roll noticing these marks - at the time I thought very little about it but when I opened the roll - all had these marks - most with at least this much "scratching" (I know someone will give me the right terminology for "scratches") The rev's seem not as "scratched" but all have some. Is this a good find or just a bunch of scratched cents. I am really enjoying this site and the input from the members - Thanks, Brent

It looks like maybe die abrasion from polishing the dies, but it could be a combo of that and post mint scratches. Hard to tell from the pic. Can you zoom back out just a little bit with more of a straight on shot of Lincoln or more of the coin.

The pros can do amazing diagnostics with some of these pics, but I'm not one of them.

I had a similar coin & was told it was caused by a Grease Filled Die. That didn't make a lot of sense to me so I asked for some clarification. I was told that the planchets can get those lines on them when they are made. A die with grease in it will let the lines remain on the coin when it's struck.

Hopefully someone might be able to verify and/or give a better explanation.

It's neither.

It's just typical weak strike. The lines you are seeing are from the pre-punched planchet - an area that did not raise up into the design on the die.

When the original metal stock used to create the planchets is rolled to the proper thickness, it will have fine parallel striations. This feature tends to be exaggerated on soft zinc metal. If the coin is struck with relatively light pressure, those parallel striations will still be visible. That appearance was the norm from the coins I got at the release ceremony in Springfield a couple months ago. Those marks should not affect the grade of the coin until you get into the gem grades although you still have to worry about those pesky water spots as well

Thanks C.D. - I went back through them and there are a bunch of them with messed up ears or very little rose up into the design. Are these worth keeping a hold of or should they go to the store? is this caused by the dies being alligned to far apart? Thanks for the info - I need to learn. Brent
Rest in Peace

The whole roll? Please tell me they were not from a mint roll!
