Okay, I acknowledge I may have made a mistake here, and I'm willing to live with that, so don't be afraid to call me a dummy...

I have a token that was pretty unidentifiable due to corrosion and wear. I could make out "ORGE" and "LIBERTY AND." I rinsed it in distilled water, then bathed it in Acetone, followed by a Xylene bath and a new rinse of water. When I patted it dry, it appeared that the outer layer of the coin flaked off. Is this really the coin flaking off, or could someone have coated it with something years ago to try to make the coin appear in better condition?

I now believe this thing used to be a Post-Colonial 1795 Liberty and Security Halfpenny.

Doesn't look cast joker.I'm thinking that it was so corroded that the corrosion adhered to the base metal and caused it to flake.Wait for Bio.He would probably know.

Looks to me like you have an electrotype coin and the Acetone/Xylene bath damaged the electroplated shell, leaving you with the pot medal filling in the middle. Colonials were favorite subjects of this type of "copy" (AKA counterfeit. Too bad this one is so damaged, I have a good size collection of electrotypes but don't have this particular coin. I find them very interesting.
