I've found what appears to be an 1896 SA 2 1/2 shlling coin, which is in the shape of an 8 pointed star. Is this a coin that has been cut down to make a medal, or was a medal issued using the 2 1/2 shilling blank?
Condition is fairly poor, and I don't suppose it's worth much, but I'd be interested in any opinions.

There was no South African 2 1/2 Shilling issued in the shape of a star, it sounds like what you have is an altered coin. If you can post a picture of it.

That's basically your answer.

Both sides in the Boer War had POW camps, and many ZAR coins were carved, altered or otherwise mutilated by the prisoners in these camps.

This website illustrates several such mutilated ZAR coins, including an 8-point star made from a halfcrown, like yours.

The website that Sap refers to describes the Trench Art beautifully, that is exactly what it is reffered to as "War Trench Art".
They are beautiful in its own right.
Each piece is unique.
Most of the pieces that you will find dates back from the 1896 and also the Crown, Half Crown, and 2 shillings denominations.
I have one such piece with Hat and Pipe engraving of a 2 1/2 Shilling 1896.
