Which coins do you think are the most counterfeited ?
I am guessing silver coins are probably the most counterfeited because of the softness of silver.
I would think pure nickel coins are probably the least counterfeited because of the hardness of nickel.

What about copper coins ? Copper is soft enough, but I would guess it would be pretty hard to fake the platina of 50 to 100 yrs of handling ?

The reason I am asking I am concerned when I buy uncertifed coins.
I normally don't get a coin worth less than $50 certified.

There are obvious fakes of the keydate coins floating around out there but it's surprising to know that the most commonly counterfeited coins are likely standard currency items. After all it costs about 60 cents to make a toonie (estimated) on a small scale but it's worth two bucks once it hits the market. Lots of articles on this out there.

Here's one of many many....

I have images of 188 DIFFERENT counterfeit Canadian coins. I have held all 188 in my hand. From 5 dollar gold to large cents as well as Tokens. Buying Certified is a FALSE sense of security unless you buy CCCS. I have held/owned counterfeit Canadian coins in holders from ICCS, PCGS as well as NGC. Learn the markers as per CCN and that wonderful guy who sells the 10 disc set on ebay sometimes.

I agree with you 1945V that silver coins are the most counterfeited. The pillar dollars more particularly the ones during the reign of King Philip V to Carolus III were the most copied be it contemporary counterfeit from silver plates, alloy cast, to a mere reproduction. It is sad to note that majority of the ones sold at ebay nowadays were all counterfeits (maybe around 60%). Before, thru some recorded facts and pictures you can easily identify counterfeits thru its laurel leaf edges. Nowadays you can acquire counterfeits having almost perfect laurel leaf edges and even weigh 27 grams or slightly lesser around 26.8 grams (these are the required weight of an 8 reales Dos Mundos as some call it). Forgers have achieved a high level of producing these fakes. I'll try to post some pictures on these for us to discuss more intensively...
