Bulk of my collection rest on a 2"x 2" mylar and placed each coin to an album. The rare ones rest on a temp slab type airtight but can be opened and placed on a see-through chest type coin cabinet. Humidity here in the Philippines is too high so from time to time I make it sure to inspect them each regularly just to make sure verdigris won't affect them. You can easily buy these mylars at ebay or coin auctions and pls buy a jewellers loupe for your use on seeing your coin regularly. Goodluck on your first album.

I was just going to suggest using the search tab at the top of the page and type in storing coins or coin storage. Oddly enough there really isn't a mountain of posts or threads on that subject. I was sure it was like cleaning coins where there would be lots of such posts.
As to your question, this depends on length of time for storage. If just for a while as you increase your collection, many methods. If for long term, again, not so many methods. As you hear from people you will probably see that a 2x2 type of flip is the most commonly used method for storing coins. Naturally this is followed by Albums, Plastic rolls, paper rolls, jars, air tights, having them slabbed by a TPGS, Plastic flips and many other methods. Might make for a poll sometimes to see how many use Albums for storage, versus all the other methods.
For me it's not time so many of my coins are basically in Albums. Also, many thousands in 2x2's too. A few other methods also.

I love all the gadgets for storage and hope most of them I buy, from reputable coin companies, are of a type most friendly to my coins. I simply choose one most appropriate for the specimen ... bulk coins seem ok in tubes, the upper grades like to live a more "single" lifestyle in flips and boxes ... mostly though I like to play with them so I need to be careful more so in my handling as opposed to the where they go from there

Storing in those plastic tubes does have a few disadvantages. Mostly if not full, everytime you move one, the coins inside could bounce around creating scratches. Also, most are screw on tops and not really air tight for long term storage. In addition to that is the fact that unless all the same you could forget what is in them and have to take them out constantly to see what is there. Probably some of the reasons so many stay with the 2x2 flips although for massive amounts that too could add up substancially monitarily.
Albums are the best for viewing both sides of coins and all of them. Also, the worst for air, moisture, contaminates to get to the coins unless the entire album is in a secure substance. I place all my Albums in Zip Lock Plastic Bags for that reason.
