I find the credit unions to be very tight with their coins. They generally only give or take coins from members. I am a member of a small credit union and don't deal with them for rolls. Banks on the other had don't question the rolls.

My CU said they didn't have extras. I went to a local bank and you have to be a member there too, plus they only had one box in the place and wouldn't short themselves. So, since I am only a member at one place, and I really don't want to open accounts everywhere, I guess I'm limited on my roll searching...bummer.

I live in a city and there is no shortage of banks. I found that if I walk in and say "I'd like $40 worth of nickels please" I almost always get it. The only trouble I've had is at the credit unions. No problem, I just go to the bank across the street. When return rolls I have never had a problem unloading $40 - 60 dollars at a time. If I have large amounts I go to a bank were I have an account.

I guess I'm lucky. My bank has a lot of branches in my city. Most of the branches have coin counting machines which makes returning them extremely easy. I have yet to have a problem getting as many rolls as I want unless I'm looking for halves.

Well I only have on account at the CU, nothing at any banks. And there are plenty of banks around, just no accounts at them. I really don't want to go around town opening accounts to go roll searching. If I had the money I would, but I don't so 'dems da berries'.

I used to get from 2 to 10 rolls of halves every other week or so. Many years ago that worked out great. Then anything decent vanished from those rolls. Now I hardly ever get those since most banks around me will not carry halves at all. Used to love to get a $50 bag of pennies from the banks but anything good dried up too. Just to many coin collectors today.

When ordering rolls from banks, do you simply ask them for "coin counter" bags ? Order boxes in their regular cash orders ? ... curious

Since I just started mass roll searching, I'm not sure yet. Waiting to hear other's opinions.

I don't pre order rolls from the bank. I walk up to the teller and say " Hi, I'd like x amount of nickels please." Always in $20 lots (the bank puts 10 rolls per bundle/elastic). I've never been turned down at $20-$40. Usually I ask for $60. If I am looking for a $100 box, I usually go to a bank which I have a business account. I suggest trying your luck. You will find witch banks give out coins and witch don't. Banks up in Canada have separate Business tellers. Try them, they are quicker and usually deal with a lot of coins. Getting rid of the rolls you've search is about the same. I never take the coins back to the same bank I pull from.... There are lots of banks. I like to try different parts of town. Poor parts vs rich parts. I am still on the fence about the best part of town.

Tell me your thinking on the "areas" of town ... Doesn't the bank you do business with take the rolled coins back ? Is it a percieved hassle to them ?

I've had a few thoughts on the areas of town. 1. Are the areas with more seniors better? ie more likely to deal with cash, therefore more likely to have old jars of coins to roll and cash in. 2. Are the more expensive areas better? ie people having more money, therefore more coins circulated. 3. Are the the less expensive areas better? ie. peoples need of the money is greater, therefore they spend the time to roll and bring coins to bank.
So far I think the less expensive area bring the greater variety of coins. I went through a box, I pulled from the poorest zip code in Canada, last week. I found almost a complete roll of 1967 centennial nickels ,"rabbits". Some one had cashed in a large coin jar. These were not in the same roll but through out the box. That box also contained the most 2010 nickels I have seen.
These are just the latest thoughts....the next box could turn it all around.
Since I take back coins to different banks than I pull from there is no hassle. There are areas of town that have 3-6 banks a few blocks apart. I have never had a problem taking back 1 - 2 bundle of coins and asking for bills.
As I said I have a business account at one bank. I can take back all the coin I want without hassle. I tend to not always go to the same bank to take back large quantities..... about once a week if I have the time.
