I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for box/roll searching. First off, how many rolls are in these boxes? (I'm new to this, please don't laugh too much.) And secondly are banks better to look at than credit unions? I went to my credit union the other day and asked for a bunch of pennies and the lady looked at me like I had an arm growing out of my forehead. So any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Banks are better then credit unions. A box of cents is $25 and has 50 rolls. Not sure about any other denominations,I'm sure someone else will answer shortly. Also if your into cents check out https://www.coppercoins.com and familiarize yourself with what to look out for. I noticed where your from, I'm about an hour away from you.

halves are 500$ and dimes are 250$, although you have to order the halves (99% of the time).

First of all .....

Roll searching is a great way to start a collection at literally face-value cost.

If you go to the Modern US coins Forum, you will find individual threads there for searches of just about every current US coin in circulation.

I personally roll search for nickels ...... it is still possible (with some work)to collect the entire circulation-strike set from bank rolls today.

Hope you join us in the roll-searching forums ..... and most of all have fun with it.

I was wondering the same thing why the banks were better than credit unions. I live in Canada. I think that both the bank and credit union in my town get there coins from the same source (Brinks I think). Maybe it has to do with the customer wrapped. Also the credit union here makes you put your account number on the rolls incase they are short. That warrants the tellers to count the coins and while they are counting them, they can look at them and possibly chery pick them. Ironically, I got a roll of loonies at the credit union and it was one short. Which questions whether they are actually checking. Here in Canada there are 50 Rolls/box. I only bought boxes of Nickels ($100) and Quarters ($500), so not sure about the other denominations.

Because I find that CU only have customer rolls (in my area) and a would rather have Brinks etc. Also if your not a member of the CU they won't even give you the time of day.

The CU my wife works at has non-members come in to buy coin. If they are looking for halves, they get my dumps. Early on in my roll hunting career, I could buy as much as I could as a non-member from various CU's in the area, although they didn't always ask if I was a member...I had luck buying coin at about 7 out of 10 of the CU's. Things may have changed with the increase of roll hunters in the area, as I have not visited any CU's in the last year.

had mixed results with credit unions in Manitoba & Saskatchewan Canada, here are the results: Location then in brackets the group they are a member of:
Russell, Manitoba (Vanguard, my dad is a member): Can get as many as I want, no question
Inglis, Manitoba (Roblin, my dad is a member): traded coins as long as I have the account numbers on them.
Shoal Lake, Manitoba (Strathclair, not a member: bought, can buy as many)
Portage, Manitoba (Austin, not a member: even cashed in my coins)
Yorkton, Saskatchewan (Cornerstone, not a member: wouldn't give many rolls to a non member, originally asked for 20 Rolls Quarters and 20 Rolls of Nickels, only got 5 Quarters and 5 nickels and 2 loonies.

Thanks for the info guys. I got $20 in pennies yesterday and have sorted them into decades for further searching. Nothing interesting really, 48d best I found along with some shiney 70ies and 80ies ones. Being in MI there were about 40 Canadians in these rolls, which were machine wrapped btw. With all of the error possibilities, is it worth trying to give a good look at each individually, or just look for the best condition and move on?

Nickelsearcer: Which forum do you mean? I have looked but havent seen anything specific to roll-searching. Thanks.

It's just a branch forum of CCF. Look at thew Modern Coin forum right above the Classic Coins forum. There's a gigantic thread filled with Lincoln roll finds.

Ok, so I'm looking through 2000 cents, other than obvious errors or S marks (I like to keep the S's) is there anything that I should keep an eye out for?

I suggest you go to copper coins site and brows it for a while and you will learn what to keep an eye out for. Also look at traildies.com, those two sites will help you a lot. I have them in My Favorites.

I have been to coppercoins and it is definitely full of good info. But I don't have the equipment to see so close to find some of those errors. I am looking for the basics and what I can see with my 5x glass I have. This is my list so far:

All Years:
Anything S marked

09-39:
Anything

40-49:
High-grade, anything else I have in droves

50-59:
High-grade
55-DDO (yeah right!)

60-69:
High-grade
60 small date
69s-DDO (ha ha!)
odd proofs that may have been misplaced

70-79:
High-grade
70s small date
72-DDO (again, ha ha!)
odd proofs that may have been misplaced

80-89:
High-grade
84 double ear
odd proofs that may have been misplaced

90-99:
High-grade
95-DDO (possible, but unlikely)
98 Wide AM
99 Wide AM
odd proofs that may have been misplaced

2000-10:
High-grade
2000 Wide AM
odd proofs that may have been misplaced

This is really what I am looking for now. I am curious if anyone recommends saving MS or better 80's on up. They aren't exactly rare and I can use them to put back in to look for older ones. Other than what I have listed, is there anything else I should watch for?

Thanks,
DMT

I'm packing up these to go back so I can start another box soon. Nothing real interesting, but I did find some nice 80's 90's and 00's. I decided to keep them for now, maybe I'll throw them back into circ someday.
