I've been using Safe-T flips for temporary storage...with the belief that if the coin does end up being in a flip for a few years that everything would be fine. But yesterday I notice this description of that product on Wizard:

Quote:
Saf-T brand flips are made of vinyl that has low levels of softeners. This makes them stiffer than regular vinyl flips. Sold in packs of 100 with inserts or bulk packs of 500 with out inserts.

Low levels? I'm ordering some Saflip (made by Kointainer) just to be, uhmmm, safe. And just to be safe, I guess all my Safe-T flips need to go in the trash.

Any thoughts from the chemists out there?

Yep, I use the mylar Saflips. They are a bit stiffer and more prone to cracking but they are completely inert.

I know that the cardboard 2x2's use mylar. I did not know that there were mylar flips, but I will take a look at the next coin show.

I have always thought that all of the clear plastic flips were meant for short-term storage. That all of them had softeners that leached out. If I bought coins in the plastic flips, I always moved them coins to a Dansco page or into a cardboard 2x2.

Ya'll were making me nervous so I pulled out the latest package of "SAFLIP" brand flips I bought. According to the package they are inert, flexible, heat sealable, contain no PVC or oil & are "The coin holder Museums use".

Thanks for bringing this up. I am planning to order some flips for a complete set I have and was trying to decide between Saflips and Safe-T flips. I didn't realize that the Safe-T flips were not inert, must be why they are 2-3X cheaper than Saflips. Looks like I will not go with Saflips even though the coins I will be putting in the flips will also be in an air-tite.
