To understand why the legend is so important you first have to have a grasp of how coins were produced in the early Victoria series. Here is a link to an interesting site where people discuss producing coins the old-fashioned way.Note the topics of "hobbing" and note the design punches made by engraving directly in actual size without the aid of any type of pantograph.http://www.engravingforum.com/showt...=1458&page=2

Well, it looks like we are going in circles.

So far, we have a lot of speculation and guessing, but
the real and actual questions are still not answered...
Looks like some of us still are NOT in a position to say for sure if we have an obv 1, or a rather very low value obv 2.
Of the six pictures I posted, some have considerable differences. Admitted,2 are 1874 and 4 are 1872.
The 74 apparently comes only in obv 2.
So, where is the difficulty determining others which mat be or may not be the same?
I know, this may be seen as a pain in the butt, however, I believe it can be a very costly situation.
Just assume (and you all know what assume stands for) you buy an 1872 Quarter as an obv 1. Then send it to a TPG and it comes back as a 2........GRRRRR
Happy days if it comes back the other way and you discover you already have a few.....but...
So, now you are not so sure about it...mmmmm
So, you send one to another TPG....just to see...and... It comes back as a 2.
NOW you decide to question the TPG,S on their criteria used to make their decision..,.
One tells you it isVickie's bust and diamonds, the other tells you it is the spacing and alignment of some letters.

I am close to giving up.....

he told me the name of some book which is the Bible for varieties and he compared it to this book..I cannot recall the name , but it cannot be had... Apparently 1 or more of the TPG's has this book and this is what they go by. I will email him and ask what the name of this book was ...

I think the question here is muddled by reliance on TPG's.

If you think it's a #one and the buyer thinks it's a #one, then it's a #one.

TPG's just give opinions. Opinions are like something we're all aware of insomuch that everyone has one. If you're a dealer relying on TPG's then the question is more difficult in that I doubt they want to be pinned down on how they arrive at their conclusion lest they change their mind(s) tomorrow.

HHB,The spacing of the T-I-A as the key marker for OBV1,has been known by collectors for a number of years. It is not merely my opinion,it is a fact.TPGs are now aware of this and a coin submitted will not come back as OBV1 unless it shows the proper TIA alignment. The editors of Charlton's are also aware of this and hopefully this will be mentioned as a marker in the next edition.

DBM,
lets hope this will be so.. it would help us all a lot...
If they (TPG's) are aware of this, WHY has nobody made it public in CCN ?
Maybe you should write an article about it. I would surely welcome that.
Since you suggest that it is the alignment... HOW do all the othere differences as they are known figurwe in to this? Is it ONLY the alignment or are there other factors that play a role?

Hello again
Just came across these images of two 1872H 25 cent pieces on a dealers web site...... I lifted them of the site as they are but removed the identifying words.
Question:
which is which obverse?
DBM, can you identify your version?
there are other very distinct differences, easy to see.
Which is which? and WHY ?
