Thoughts? Yeah, the guy is illegitimately hyping his coins as US colonial issues when they are not. VOC is the Dutch East India Company which operated in Asia, not the US colonies and especially not in 1820 when the United States had already existed for 44 years

Don't buy coins on ebay from a seller in Indonesia.

This guy's feedback is NOT good:

It sounded really weird to me too. Batav (Bativia) is Jakarta, Indonesia. So it makes sense that this guy would have the coin. It makes no sense why the US would have anything to do with it. Heck, it was a Dutch colony not even a British one, so there isn't even a connection that way!

one difficulty that this seller's items causes for me is that he "specializes" in hammered bronze or copper.
Genuine VOC coins had very simple designs and were often minted to a "rough & ready" standard - perfect for 21st century counterfeiting. Pitted surfaces are the norm. Chemical aging is inexpensive.

I did buy some Batavian duits off another Javan dealer, who was reasonable for postage. I think I got three for $8, including postage. I won't know if they're duds until I meet an expert, but at least I didn't pay much.

Saruma, not that it matters in terms of the point under discussion, but Java was British-occupied from about 1811 to 1824.

Ah, right, I forgot the British held it briefly. It has some relevance since the coin supposedly dates from 1820, but I don't trust the guy enough to buy anything from him!
