What happened here? The obverse has a raised rim somewhat like the coin is in a bezel. The reverse is normal. The last picture shows the thickness difference with a normal cent.

It looks like a misaligned die. Is it really thin on the edge by the date?

It's finning of the rim. It's caused by abnormally high overall striking pressure or increased localized pressure due to slight die tilt.

Thanks for the info Mike. I'd never seen one like that b4. Scooby, it's not thin by the date.

I went and read up on it as soon as Mike Diamond answered (It's further in my error encyclopedia than I have read so far).

It says it is a type of error where there is excessve space between the die shaft and the collar. It says it can be caused by a die shaft being smaller than normal, or the collar diameter is larger than normal.
It doesn't mention anything about the "abnormally high overall striking pressure" that Mr. Diamond mentioned, but I certainly would not question anything he had to say. Just adding to it.

It goes on to say that the error community has yet to embrace this flawed coin as a collectible error.

Hmmm. It is an error, no? I'd hang on to it. I think I've run across a few of those roll searching in the past and dismissed them. Maybe I'll hang on to a few of them in the future. You never know.

If you check examples from the same year they all look like that to a degree. It's just one of the things they tried that year. Must not have necessary as the examples now are struck about as much as a button for strike. You can tell coins from that year because the area next to the rim and the ugly E in LIBERTY and the large FG on the reverse.
