A recent purchase. Interesting coin, but too old for Krause to be of help. If anyone can tell me anything about it I would be grateful.

We are talking about a Thaler-sized silver coin, that much is certain.

Looks like it's struck under Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor (1564 - 1576), king of Germany, Hungary, Bohemia, Croatia, Archduke of Austria. Judging by the two-headed eagle I'd guess this is a coin from his Austrian possessions.

Thank you for your answer.

As an OFEC-collector I would like to find out exactly where this was minted. I have coins from some Austrian possessions, but not many. This could easily be a new one for me. If anyone knows how I can find out then that would be splendid.

It's often spelled "Cambray" in English.

Cambray was originally part of the "Low Countries", or Netherlands, owned by the Bishops of Cambray. It was annexed by the Spanish/Austrian king/emperor Charles I/V and added to the Hapsburg (Spanish) Netherlands in 1543. France invaded and annexed it in 1677, and it has been French ever since. Some catalogues list it under "French States", some under "Netherlands" or "Low Countries".

Thank you very much Sap and DCH!

I am not altogether sure how I should place this, though. Cambray is clear, but under where? I always group these, same as Krause. Belgium is out of the question for anything older than 1830. Spanish Netherlands, French State or Netherlands state?

I guess Krause would have used "French state", so perhaps I should stick with that since I tend to use their classification for 1601 and forwards. Although it feels artificial to list a Thaler under France. Perhaps I will move it to Netherlands after a while...
